v1.8.1 • Adds in the ability to add in other video clips on top of the clips within the editor. v1.8 has been released with the following updates: • A video editor timeline that reads like a real editor. A big timecode sits over a proper ruler, and your recording appears as a clip with a strip of frames across it, so you can see where to cut. The parts you trim away fade out instead of vanishing. • Colour-coded tracks. Video, zoom, each annotation and the audio get their own labelled track, and the audio track has its own mute button and volume slider right in the header. • A zoom and pan bar under the timeline. Drag the bar to scroll, or drag its round ends to zoom in on a moment. The timeline follows the playhead while you play, and you can grab the playhead by its flag to scrub. • Snapping you can switch off. Edges snap to the playhead and to each other, with a magnet button to turn it off and the option key to skip it for one drag. Dragging a trim handle shows the exact time. • A crop box that stays editable. Drag it to move it, pull any of its eight handles to resize, hold shift to keep its shape or option to resize from the centre, and use the arrow keys to nudge it. Pick 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3 or 4:5, or type an exact width and height, and swap between portrait and landscape. • Crop shows the whole frame while you work, so you can grow a crop back out later instead of starting over. Press Enter or double-click to apply, Esc to cancel. • Edit like a video editor. Press S to split the clip at the playhead, click a piece and press Delete, and the rest closes up. Q and W trim the start or end to the playhead, M drops a marker, J, K and L play and stop, and the up and down arrows jump between edits. • Undo everything. Trims, splits, cuts, zooms and crops are now undoable along with your annotations, one step at a time. • While you drag a trim handle the preview shows the frame you are cutting on, and Esc puts a drag back where it started. • New shortcuts: C for crop, X for cut mode, Z to add a zoom. v1.7 has been released with the following updates: • A friendlier screenshot editor. Everything you place, from arrows and boxes to blur, text and images, stays selected with handles, so you can move and resize it straight away without switching tools. Images, boxes, text and step badges can be rotated too. • Text works like a design app. Click to place a text frame, or drag to make a box that wraps. Move it by its border while you type, drag the sides to rewrap, and drag the corners to resize. • Numbered step badges (1, 2, 3) for walkthroughs. They renumber themselves when you reorder or delete one. • Spotlight: drag a box and everything else dims, to point at exactly what matters. • An eyedropper to pick any color from your screenshot. • A settings bar that shows only what the current tool needs: color, stroke, size and opacity. • Zoom and pan the screenshot (Ctrl or cmd and scroll, cmd 0 to fit, hold space to pan), which helps a lot on long full page captures. • Layers you can drag to reorder, duplicate and fade, with your screenshot shown as the locked background layer. The eraser is gone: select anything and press Delete. • Crop to an exact size by typing the width and height, and flip between portrait and landscape. v1.6 has been released with the following updates: • Pick your recording quality: Small (720p), Standard (1080p, the new default) or High (full resolution). Standard is about 15 MB a minute, so a 7 minute walkthrough lands around 100 MB, small enough to drop into Slack. Recordings used to come out up to three times that size. • Clearer record buttons. Each source in the Record tab now has its own Rec button, so tapping a row no longer starts a recording by surprise, and the popup shows a get ready screen with Cancel while the countdown or the screen picker is up. • Full page screenshots now work on web apps that scroll inside a panel, such as Gmail, and on sites with smooth scrolling or headers that turn sticky as you scroll. • A proper crop in the screenshot editor. Drag the crop box to move it, pull its edges or corners to resize, nudge it with the arrow keys, and come back later to adjust it. Ratio presets keep their shape as you resize. • Move and resize anything you have drawn. Selected items get handles, images keep their proportions, guides snap items into line, and the arrow keys nudge them. • Edited exports never come out bigger than the original recording, and exports with a music track finish in seconds instead of many minutes. • The video editor keeps time-limited overlays and zooms on screen during still moments, places annotations correctly after a crop or a resolution change, and no longer breaks an export if you keep editing while it runs. • Lots of smaller fixes: the Screen + Cam setup window no longer stalls if you take your time, closing the floating camera turns the camera light off, Disconnect stops a Drive upload in progress, Escape in a text box no longer closes the screenshot editor, and full page screenshots open at a readable size. v1.5 has been released with the following updates: • Share a recording with a link. From the recording-done card or the editor's Export menu, screensnap uploads the clip to your own Google Drive, marks it "anyone with the link", and gives you a share page that plays it back. Sharing is per recording and opt-in, so your other recordings stay private. • A branded share page at screensnap.xyz that plays your recording for anyone you send the link to. Nothing is hosted by screensnap; the video streams from your own Drive. v1.4 has been released with the following updates: • Optional backup to your own Google Drive. Connect your Drive once in the new Settings tab and finished recordings can upload themselves to a private screensnap folder, or send single clips from the recording-done card and the editor. Off by default, and nothing else leaves your machine. • Upload an edited MP4 to Drive straight from the editor's Export menu. • A guided Cloud setup window, plus live upload progress on the done card and in the editor. v1.3.1 added: • Undo in the editor. Ctrl+Z (cmd+Z on Mac) reverts an accidental move, resize, or delete, and shift redoes it. • Tab recordings now survive going fullscreen mid-take. • Starting a second recording right after the first now works cleanly. • The selection outline clears when you click away from it. v1.3 added: • A proper multi-track timeline in the video editor. There's no time limit, no account, and no forced cloud. Everything stays on your machine unless you turn on the optional backup to your own Google Drive, and all of it is open source. RECORD ANYTHING, FREE AND UNLIMITED • Your whole screen, any app window, or a single browser tab, saved as native MP4 (H.264/AAC). • Screen + Cam puts your webcam in an always-on-top bubble with pause and stop right on it. Set it up first (circle or square, mirrored or not), then record. • Capture system or tab audio and your microphone, with pause, resume, and mic mute. • Choose Small, Standard or High quality to balance file size and sharpness. Your recording shows as a clip with a strip of frames across it, and the zoom, each overlay, and the audio get their own colour-coded track. Drag blocks to move them, drag the edges to resize, and everything snaps into place. A zoom and pan bar and a big timecode keep long recordings easy to navigate. • Trim the ends, or cut mistakes out of the middle. • Zoom into the action with draggable focus blocks that ease in and out. • Add text, arrows, boxes, blur, logos, images, and animated GIFs. Resize them right on the video and set when they appear and disappear (circle something, then stop circling it). • Undo and redo. Ctrl+Z (cmd+Z on Mac) reverts a move, resize, or delete, and shift redoes it. • Edit the audio. Mute regions without cutting the picture, change the volume, or mix in a voiceover or music track from a file. • Crop with a box you can move and resize by its handles, free-form or locked to 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3 or 4:5, or type an exact size. Change the speed, or wrap the video in a gradient backdrop with rounded corners and a shadow. • Export a native MP4 (pick 720p or 1080p to shrink the file, and an edit never comes out bigger than the original) or an animated GIF, or download the original untouched. Every frame is encoded on your device. SCREENSHOTS • Visible area or full page, saved as PNG. Full page also works on web apps that scroll inside a panel, like Gmail. • Annotate before saving with text, arrows, shapes, numbered steps, spotlight, highlight, and blur. Everything you place can be moved and resized, and most things rotated. • Crop with a box you can move, resize, or set to an exact size, zoom in for detail, drag layers to reorder them, add an image or logo, and come back later to re-edit your text. • Add a padded backdrop, then copy to the clipboard or save to your computer. OPTIONAL CLOUD BACKUP (YOUR DRIVE, NOT OURS) • Connect your own Google Drive and finished recordings can upload themselves to a private screensnap folder, with progress shown as they go. • Or upload one clip at a time from the recording-done card or the editor's Export menu. • Share a recording with a link that plays it from your own Drive. Only the recordings you choose to share can be seen by others. • Straight from your browser to Google. No screensnap servers, no middleman, no account with us, and it only uses Google's narrowest Drive permission, so screensnap can only ever see the files it created. • Off by default. Disconnect anytime and the access is revoked at Google. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Capture, processing, and storage all happen locally. Nothing leaves your device unless you connect the optional Google Drive backup. • No screensnap servers, no telemetry, no analytics. The only network calls are the uploads you choose to send to your own Drive. • Minimal permissions. Screen and window sharing use Chrome's own picker, and screensnap only touches the tab you point it at. It has no background access to your browsing.
