Overview
Format scholarly citations from selected text. Right-click any DOI, PMID, ISBN, arXiv ID, or scholarly URL.
Scholar Sidekick turns any scholarly identifier into a clean, formatted citation in one click - without leaving the page you're reading. Highlight a DOI, PubMed ID, PMC ID, ISBN, arXiv ID, ADS bibcode, or scholarly URL on any web page. Right-click and choose "Cite with Scholar Sidekick". A small popup opens with your formatted citation, ready to copy. HOW IT WORKS 1. Select text on any page that contains a scholarly identifier — for example, a DOI like 10.1038/nature12373, or "PMID: 23842501", or a Wikipedia article snippet that mentions a paper. 2. Right-click → Cite with Scholar Sidekick. 3. The popup shows your selection and formats it in the style you've chosen. 4. Click Copy. Paste into your essay, manuscript, or reference list. WHAT YOU CAN CITE • DOI - both bare (10.1038/nature12373) and URL form (https://doi.org/…). • PubMed ID (PMID). • PubMed Central ID (PMCID). • ISBN-10 and ISBN-13, with or without dashes. • arXiv ID - modern (2207.00077) and legacy (cs.CL/0301001), with or without version suffixes. • NASA ADS bibcode. • Scholarly URLs from a curated allowlist of major bibliographic data sources. The extension auto-detects which kind of identifier you've selected; you don't need to label it. CITATION STYLES • Five quick picks always one click away: Vancouver, APA, AMA, IEEE, CSE. • Search any of 10,000+ CSL styles inside the popup - Nature, Cell, The Lancet, Chicago Manual of Style, Harvard, MLA, ACS, Royal Society, journal-specific styles, and more. • The most-recently-used style is remembered locally for next time. • Every output is generated by the same engine that powers scholar-sidekick.com, so formatting is identical between extension and website. WHO IT'S FOR • Researchers writing literature reviews who want to capture references as they read. • Students drafting essays who need quick citations in a specific style. • Journalists fact-checking against scholarly sources. • Librarians and reference desks helping patrons. • Writers cross-referencing books and journal articles. PRIVACY-FIRST BY DESIGN • No content scripts. The extension does not read page contents, browsing history, or anything else from the pages you visit. It only ever sees the text you explicitly select and submit via the right-click menu. • Selected text is sent to scholar-sidekick.com to produce the citation, then discarded - not stored, not used to train models, not shared. • No advertising trackers. No behavioural analytics. No user accounts required. • Standard request metadata (IP, user agent, timestamp) is logged for rate-limiting and abuse prevention only - same as any web service. • Full privacy policy: https://scholar-sidekick.com/legal/privacy TIPS • Press Cmd+Enter (Mac) or Ctrl+Enter (Windows/Linux) inside the popup textarea to format without reaching for the mouse. • The "Open in Scholar Sidekick →" link in the popup footer carries your selection and chosen style to the full editor at scholar-sidekick.com - no re-paste needed. Useful when you want to add multiple references, switch to footnote mode, or export to BibTeX, RIS, EndNote XML, CSV, or Markdown. • The popup also opens via the toolbar icon without a selection - paste an identifier manually if you'd rather type. WHAT IT IS — AND WHAT IT ISN'T Scholar Sidekick is a citation formatter. It resolves identifiers and produces clean text - that's it. It is NOT a reference manager (Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote) - it doesn't store libraries, manage PDFs, or sync across devices. Use it alongside your reference manager: paste in identifiers, get citations, copy out. For a full reference workflow, scholar-sidekick.com offers batch export to RIS, BibTeX, EndNote XML, CSV, and Markdown for handoff to any reference manager. POWERED BY • Citation Style Language (CSL) - the open standard behind 10,000+ citation styles. • Public bibliographic registries - Scholar Sidekick resolves identifiers against established scholarly metadata services. • The Scholar Sidekick API at scholar-sidekick.com, also available as a standalone web tool, REST API, and MCP server for AI agents. LIMITS The free tier this extension uses is rate-limited to 12 requests per 30 seconds per IP address. For interactive use this is plenty; the popup shows a countdown if you hit the limit so you know exactly when to retry.
