Found a chess position in an article, a study page or a paused video? Select the board or right-click a visible board image. ScanChess reads chess diagrams right in your browser and shows the board and FEN in a card on the same page. FREE ON-DEVICE READING Screenshots, diagrams and paused video frames are read on your device by default. No account is required, no credits are used, and the image is not uploaded for on-device recognition. OPTIONAL SERVER READING If your browser cannot read a picture reliably, such as a photo of a real board or an unfamiliar piece style, you can choose “Read on the server · 1 credit”. This requires a registered ScanChess account and uses 1 credit per board. Only when you choose server reading is the selected image sent to ScanChess for recognition. Without an account, the extension asks you to sign in before sending it. CHECK, CORRECT AND ANALYZE • Select a board on the page or right-click a visible board image. • Review the recognized pieces, correct them, and choose White or Black to move. • Flip the board and copy FEN. • Analyze the position on ScanChess, Lichess or Chess.com. • Connect your ScanChess account to keep recognized positions in your website library. This saves the FEN, board orientation and source URL, not the image. The extension focuses on webpage chess boards. For handwritten scoresheets and PGN transcription, use scanchess.com. Capture is limited to visible content on ordinary webpages. Pause videos before scanning. Browser settings, extension stores and other protected pages cannot be captured. Recognition can make mistakes: always review the board before analysis. For study and post-game review, not live-game assistance or automatic moves. Images are captured only when you start a scan and are cropped locally. The extension does not collect browsing history or include analytics scripts.
