Overview

Read any selected text word-by-word with RSVP speed reading, in an overlay on the page.

Read anything on the web one word at a time. RSVP Reader flashes a text word by word at a fixed point on the screen. Your eyes stop travelling across lines and jumping back, which is where a large part of reading time actually goes. One letter of every word is highlighted in red and always stays in the same place, so your gaze has a single target to rest on and never has to hunt for where the next word begins. HOW TO START - Select some text, right-click it and choose "Read with RSVP" - Select some text and press Alt+Shift+R - Select some text, click the toolbar icon and press "Read selection" - Read a whole article without selecting anything: press Alt+Shift+P, or open the toolbar icon and press "Read whole page". Navigation, sidebars, footers, forms and hidden text are left out, so you get the article and not the furniture around it. WHILE YOU READ - Space - play and pause - Left and Right arrow - jump back or forward 5 seconds - Esc - close the reader - A speed slider from 100 to 1000 words per minute. It works while the text is running, so you can push the pace up through easy passages and drop it again for the dense ones. Your setting is remembered. - At the end: how many words you read, how long it took, and the speed you actually averaged. BUILT FOR REAL PAGES Not everything can be read one word at a time. Where a picture, a table or a code block was, RSVP Reader shows a short marker - [image], [table], [code] - so you know to look at the page for it instead of quietly missing it. The end of a paragraph is held a beat longer, so the text keeps its shape rather than running together into one stream. The reader is drawn in an isolated layer above the page. It does not alter the page you are reading, and the page cannot interfere with it. PDFS In Chrome's built-in PDF viewer the text lives inside the plugin, where extensions cannot reach it directly. Select the text - Ctrl+A takes the whole document - then right-click it and choose "Read with RSVP". PRIVACY No account, no servers, no analytics, no tracking. The extension makes no network requests at all. The only thing it stores is your reading speed, and it stays on your own computer. It asks for no site permissions either: it gains access to a page only at the moment you start it there, and only to that page. Keyboard shortcuts can be changed at any time from chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
