Overview

Local-first workspace for working text. Capture fast, back up clearly, and hand off to coworkers, friends, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude.

root workspace is a private-by-default local workspace for working text in Chrome. Use it for the text that is not ready to become a doc yet: rough notes, pasted research, page links, tasks, reusable snippets, and ideas you are still shaping. root is also lightweight context infrastructure for AI-assisted work. Keep project notes, decisions, tasks, links, snippets, and handoff context in a workspace you control, then choose the exact slice to send to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, browser AI sidebars, a doc, a coworker, or another person. Your context stays portable instead of being locked inside one chat or one platform. root is not trying to be a giant note archive or a heavy project system. It is a lighter work surface for getting things down fast, keeping the useful bits close, and handing off only what you choose. What root helps with: - capture rough text quickly from the browser - append quick notes, tasks, dates, and current page context to Inbox - keep open tasks visible without turning root into a heavy task manager - keep Inbox readable with newest notes at the top - save reusable snippets for repeated working text - add a saved prompt snippet before a Context Handoff - preview what is leaving root before you copy it - keep working notes readable beside browser AI companions when you want help - read messy notes in Clean View - import and export your local workspace when you want a backup Why people use root: - local-first and private by default - no root account required for core use - stored locally in the browser - plain-text and markdown-friendly - explicit about what gets copied, exported, or handed off - useful for active working text, AI context, and project memory that should stay with you Current features include: on-demand workspace, Quick Capture popup, Inbox, Open Tasks, Snippets, Clean View, tags and pinned items, Tidy paste, Last backup status, export/import, Workspace health, Archive and Trash, and Context Handoff with optional metadata and links-only output. What is new in version 0.1.5: Inbox now reads newest-first with calmer spacing, Quick Capture gives clearer local feedback, Open Tasks and system rows are quieter, Inbox tasks continue to roll into Open Tasks, and Clean View, local import/export, and editing flows are more reliable. root is local-first. Your workspace lives in your browser storage unless you choose to export, copy, or hand off text somewhere else.
