Retone is an on-device AI writing assistant for Chrome. Rewrite any text into the tone you want, or ask the built-in assistant for quick help — all powered by Chrome's built-in AI, so your words stay on your device. ⚙ FIRST-RUN SETUP (PLEASE READ) Retone uses Chrome's built-in AI (Gemini Nano), which Chrome ships turned OFF by default. A one-time setup is needed before rewriting and chat will work: 1. Use Chrome 128 or newer on a device that supports Gemini Nano (roughly 22 GB free disk for the model and a recent GPU). 2. Open chrome://flags/#prompt-api-for-gemini-nano and set it to "Enabled". 3. Open chrome://flags/#optimization-guide-on-device-model and set it to "Enabled BypassPerfRequirement". 4. Relaunch Chrome. The AI model then downloads automatically the first time you use it. If you ever see "On-device AI is unavailable", it simply means this setup hasn't been done yet. Retone shows the exact steps inside its toolbar popup and options page, and re-checks for you automatically. REWRITE ANY TEXT Select text on a page, choose a style, and Retone rewrites it on your device: • Right-click your selection and choose "Rewrite as…" • Press Ctrl+Shift+U (Cmd+Shift+U on Mac) In editable fields (email, docs, forms, chat boxes) Retone replaces the text in place — Accept it, Re-run for a fresh version, or Cancel. On read-only text, you get a one-click Copy. ASK THE WRITING ASSISTANT Open the chat from the toolbar popup for quick help with your writing — draft a reply, reword a sentence, or fix phrasing. Answers stay short by default; just ask for "more detail" when you want a longer response. Like rewriting, the chat runs entirely on your device.
