Herbaceous plant 1-2m tall, purple stem. Leaves are lanceolate, alternate. Flowers are pale yellow or white, with dark red pistils. The calyx (dark red part surrounding the fruit) is thick, succulent, and has a characteristic sour taste. Uses: Red artichoke calyx is used to make hibiscus tea, soft drinks, syrups, jams, and wine. Contains a lot of vitamin C, anthocyanins, and antioxidants. It helps with digestion, is a diuretic, lowers blood pressure slightly, and beautifies the skin.
