Readability Read Aloud
Overview
Read articles, PDFs, chats, X articles, and YouTube transcripts with private local AI summaries and speech.
Readability Reader transforms web articles and PDFs into a clean, distraction-free reading experience with private, local-first AI tools. Features: • Extracts the main content from web articles using Mozilla Readability • Opens PDFs in a responsive reader powered by PDF.js • Preserves PDF headings, pictures, tables, formulas, links, and citations • Restores complex PDF layouts to a natural reading order • Generates concise on-device summaries when the browser’s Summarizer API is available • Reads articles and PDFs aloud with PocketTTS or Inflect • Offers multiple voices, playback controls, sentence highlighting, and click-to-continue reading • Normalizes punctuation and web addresses for clearer speech • Announces article images using their accessible descriptions • Excludes navigation, URLs, and code blocks from speech when appropriate • Stores downloaded voices and models locally for faster reuse • Includes controls to clear all cached models and voices Privacy: Article extraction, PDF conversion, layout analysis, text-to-speech, and supported AI summarization happen locally in your browser. Readability Reader does not send the text of your articles or PDFs to an application server. Some speech and document-recognition model files are downloaded directly from Hugging Face when first needed. These files are cached in browser storage and can be removed using the “Clear all cached models/voices” button. How to use: Open a web article or PDF. Click the Readability Reader toolbar icon. Review the clean extracted content and optional local AI summary. Choose a text-to-speech provider and voice. Click “Read article” to begin. Click any sentence to continue reading from that point. For local PDF files, enable “Allow access to file URLs” in the extension settings.
