My three decades of working in Amazonian and Central American rainforests have shown this bird’s robust black and white bill to be an incredibly powerful tool, essential for cracking the toughest nuts and seeds. The white, bare skin patch surrounding its eye is a notable field characteristic, giving it an intelligent, discerning look. Observing this highly social and vocal species in its natural canopy habitat reveals its crucial role as a seed disperser, making it indispensable to the health and diversity of the forest ecosystem.
