QuietMap: Noise Check for Homes & Apartments
Overview
Will you sleep there? Road, air and rail noise, train horns at night and bars nearby, on Zillow, Redfin and Realtor.com listings.
Will you sleep there? QuietMap adds a quiet score to home listings on Zillow, Redfin and Realtor.com, so you hear about the freight trains, the highway and the bar on the corner before you tour, sign a lease or make an offer. Open a house or apartment listing and a small tab appears on the edge of the page with a score from 0 to 100: Quiet, Mostly quiet, Some noise or Loud. Click it to see what costs points: • Road, airport and rail noise at the address, as a 24-hour average (US DOT National Transportation Noise Map) • Train horns: rail crossings within 1 km without a quiet zone, how close the nearest one is, and how many trains pass at night (FRA crossing inventory) • Nightlife: bars and clubs within 150 m and 400 m, and any stadium within 1 km (OpenStreetMap) • Reported crime nearby, in its own section that is never part of the score: violent and property offenses within 400 m over 12 months, compared with the rest of the city, for the 73 cities and counties whose police or sheriff publish incident locations Made for light sleepers, night-shift workers, parents of babies, people who work from home, and anyone house hunting or apartment hunting in a city they can't visit at 2 am. WHERE IT WORKS Works on Zillow, Redfin and Realtor.com listing pages: single home and apartment listings in US towns and cities across the lower 48 states. Homes in open country or on the water show "Not covered yet", and listings that hide their location show nothing. FREE, WITH AN OPTIONAL REPORT The score and its details are free on every listing. For a home you're serious about, the panel links to the full report for that address: a one-page summary (what you'll hear, the best bedroom side, the three things to ask), the night hour by hour, a map of the blocks around it with the quietest spot within 500 m, how it ranks in its city, and questions for the landlord or seller. It prints or saves as a PDF, and its link keeps working. One address is $2.99, one-time. Touring several homes in a day? A day pass ($4.99, one-time) opens the full report for every address for 24 hours and puts up to five side by side, and the hunt pass ($9.99 a month, cancel any time) opens every address for as long as you're looking. Both passes include the full noise map on our website, block by block, to rule out an area before you open its listings. Payments are handled by Polar. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Reads only the listing's location and street address from the page: not your account, saved homes or searches • Works out the score on your computer from our published data files; the listing you view is never sent anywhere • No account, no analytics, no tracking, no remote code • Its one permission beyond the three sites is storage, to remember where you dragged the tab The sound levels are modelled 24-hour averages, not measurements at the door, so a night visit is still worth it.
