QR Code Scanner for Chrome™
Overview
Scan QR Code from your website, camera or image files
QR Code Scanner for Chrome - What's New in Version 3.1 Scan any QR code from your webcam, from an image file, or straight from the page you are looking at - and now create your own codes too. Version 3.1 is the largest update this extension has had: a dozen new features, a redesigned popup, and a long list of fixes. Everything still runs entirely on your own computer, no scan is ever uploaded, and the extension asks only for the permissions it genuinely needs. YOUR RESULTS NOW STICK AROUND Previously every result vanished the moment the popup closed, including when you clicked a link. Now your scans are saved. Reopen the extension and your recent codes are waiting, newest first. Clear the whole list with one click, remove single entries, or switch history off completely in Settings. RESULTS THAT UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY CONTAIN A QR code is rarely just plain text, so the scanner now recognises what it is looking at and shows it properly. A Wi-Fi code displays the network name and security type, plus a hidden password you can reveal and copy with one tap, instead of a wall of raw characters. A contact card shows the name, job title, phone numbers and email addresses, and saves straight to your address book as a .vcf file. Calendar events can be saved as .ics. Phone numbers, email addresses, text messages and map locations each get their own sensible actions. CREATE QR CODES, NOT JUST READ THEM A new Generate tab turns any text or link into a QR code. One button fills in the address of the page you are on. Choose the error correction level, then download the result as a PNG image or copy it straight to your clipboard. You can also right-click any page or link and choose "QR code for this page" to generate one instantly - ideal for sending a link to your phone. MORE WAYS TO SCAN Drag an image onto the popup, or paste one you have already copied. Right-click any picture on a web page and choose "Scan QR code in this image". Use Select area to drag a box around a small code on a busy page: the scanner zooms into just that region, which greatly improves the odds. Choose which camera to use if you have more than one, and switch on the camera light where your hardware supports it. Read 1D barcodes as well, including EAN, UPC and Code 128, where your browser supports them, and read several codes in a single image at once. SETTINGS, SHORTCUTS AND DARK MODE A new Settings page lets you copy results automatically, play a sound on a successful scan, choose how many results to keep, and pick a light, dark or system-matching theme. Keyboard shortcuts open the extension or scan the current tab without touching the mouse. The whole interface now follows your system's dark mode. FIXES The camera really stops now. Switching from the camera to another scan mode used to hide the video without turning the camera off, so the webcam light stayed on and the camera kept running in the background. It now shuts down properly the moment you switch away or close the popup. No more repeated results. Holding a code in front of the camera used to add the same result to the list again and again, every few seconds. A code you keep in view is now recorded once. Every action tells you what happened. Scanning a page that contains no code, or a page Chrome does not allow extensions to read, used to do nothing at all: no message, no explanation. Every scan now ends either in a result or in a clear reason why there is none. Safer links. The Open button used to appear for anything that vaguely resembled a link, including addresses that cannot safely be opened. Only genuine web, email, telephone and message links are clickable now, so a malicious code cannot offer you a dangerous one. Better camera errors. If another application is already using your camera, or your computer has no camera at all, you now get a plain explanation instead of silence. The permission page also tells you when no camera was found, offers a retry button, and returns you to scanning once access is granted. Smaller fixes. Copying now confirms itself. Buttons carry proper labels for screen readers and can be reached with the keyboard. A memory leak when scanning image files is gone, and the rating link points at the current Chrome Web Store address. TRANSLATED PROPERLY All 43 languages have been brought up to date and reviewed. Roughly five thousand missing translations were added and long-standing errors corrected, including buttons labelled with the wrong form of a word and text left in the wrong language. PRIVACY Decoding happens locally, inside your browser. Your scans, your history and the codes you generate never leave your computer, and the extension works offline.
