PubMed Markdown
Overview
Convert PubMed and PMC articles to clean, structured Markdown. Full text from PubMed Central, abstract fallback for everything else.
Turn any PubMed or PubMed Central article into a clean, structured Markdown file, straight from your browser. WHAT IT DOES • On a PMC article page, click the icon to copy the Markdown or download a .md file. The page you already have open is converted locally, so there is no extra request. • On a PubMed record page, the extension resolves the PMID. If the article is in PubMed Central, you get the full text. Otherwise you get the abstract and metadata. • Batch converter: paste PMIDs, PMCIDs, DOIs, or PubMed and PMC URLs, and convert them in one tab with per-article status, preview, copy, and download. • Right-click any PubMed or PMC article, or a link to one, and choose "Save article as Markdown". WHAT YOU GET • Title, authors, journal, date, DOI, PMID, PMCID, PDF link, and keywords. • Structured abstracts, section hierarchy, in-text citations that link to the reference list. • Tables as Markdown tables, with captions and footnotes. • Figures with image links and captions. • Equations converted from MathML to LaTeX. • References with DOI, PMC, and PubMed links. • Supplementary material text through the NCBI BioC API (optional). • Scanned legacy articles include page images and indexed references. Files are named PMCxxxxxxx.md for full text and PMIDxxxxxxxx.md for abstract-only articles, and saved to Downloads/pubmed-markdown by default. SETTINGS Add your NCBI email address and API key so requests identify you and get the higher NCBI rate limit. Both are optional and are sent only to NCBI. PRIVACY No servers, no analytics, no tracking. The extension talks only to NCBI (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, eutils.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). Your settings stay in Chrome's extension storage. OPEN SOURCE Based on the pubmed-markdown Python package by Shlok Natarajan. Source code: https://github.com/btagliani/pubmed-markdown-extension PubMed and PubMed Central are services of the U.S. National Library of Medicine. This extension is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by NLM or NCBI.
