Proofkit – Pre-delivery checks for writers

Catch what you missed before you deliver: client rules, spelling and typos — fixed in one click, only where you say so.

Proofkit is the last pass before you deliver. It checks your client's house style, spelling consistency and typos in the editor you are already writing in — so the check-only steps at the end of a job stop being a manual routine. It reads the text out of WordPress (block and classic editors), Medium and most other browser-based CMSes, and finds: - words your draft spells two ways when both ways are correct, such as email / e-mail. A spellchecker cannot flag these, because neither form is a mistake - breaches of the style guide you registered for that client (banned terms, length, required keywords) - US and UK English mixed in the same piece (organize / organise, colour / color) - typos (AI proofreading, optional) Each finding is highlighted where it occurs, and listed in the side panel. ■ It never rewrites your text on its own Findings are shown to you, and that is all. Your text only changes when you press "Adopt" on one of them, or "Apply all suggestions". A bulk apply can be undone in one click, and the text from immediately before it is kept as a copy — so you can still get it back after closing the panel, or after restarting the browser. ■ The words a spellchecker cannot help you with Your browser already underlines misspellings. It says nothing about the ones where both forms are correct — and those are the ones that end up mixed in a long article. Three kinds account for most of it: compounds that can be written open, hyphenated or closed (email / e-mail is the classic one); product and service names, whose own capitalisation is easy to lose halfway down a draft; and acronyms typed in capitals in one paragraph and in lower case in the next. 254 groups and 541 variants ship with it, and you can add your own. Two-word verbs are left alone: "log in", "set up" and "check out" are verbs and stay open, so "Please log in" is never rewritten. Pairs where the hyphen is a matter of grammar rather than of consistency — "a long-term plan" but "in the long term" — are deliberately not in the dictionary, because unifying them would introduce errors. ■ Links, code and file names are never touched A URL, a file path, an email address, a file name, and anything inside backticks or a fenced code block are left exactly as written. A link like "https://example.com/log-in", an attribute inside a tag, and a file called "set-up-guide.md" all survive a bulk apply intact. This is the part that makes a find-and-replace safe to run over a finished article. ■ US or UK English — one setting Pick your region and the dictionary flips: plurals and verb forms are included, so "organises" and "organisations" are caught, not just "organise". Portuguese ships with the same idea (Brazil / Portugal). If the brief calls for British English, you set UK, and every American form in the draft is listed for you. You can also override any single word from a dropdown — the dictionary is yours to edit. ■ Unify a term everywhere in one pass Proofkit finds every occurrence across the article, lets you choose which spelling wins, and replaces them in one pass. It is a single-pass replacement, so chains like "organise → organize → Organize" cannot cascade and corrupt the word, and one that is already correct is never doubled up. In editors that split each paragraph into its own element — the WordPress block editor does this — the whole article is still treated as one piece of text. ■ Client presets (style guides) Register each client's banned words, word count and required keywords once, then switch presets when you start their article. You stop having to remember that this client never allows "very", or that they want at least 1,500 words. ■ AI proofreading, with your own API key (nothing goes through our servers) Typo checking is optional. It runs on an AI service that you choose and connect with your own API key: several major cloud services are supported, as are local model servers that run on your own machine and cost nothing to use. Press "Fetch model list" and pick one from a dropdown; you never have to type its name. The services currently supported are listed at proofkit.jp. ■ Snippets Delivery notes, replies about revisions, status updates — the things you retype every week — inserted in one click, with automatic dates and a marker for where the cursor should end up. ■ Source URL formatting Paste the URLs you used and get them back in a consistent shape, such as "Site name | Publisher | Article title", ready to copy. Anything that could not be read is left blank for you to fill in on the spot — it is never guessed. ■ Privacy Spelling and style-guide checks make no network requests at all; they run entirely on your computer. Only when you press AI proofreading is your text sent to the AI service you configured — and the developer never receives it. Choose a local model and the text never leaves your machine. Your API key is stored in your browser and nowhere else. ■ Who it is for - Freelance writers juggling several clients with different house styles - Anyone whose pre-delivery routine is "check spelling, check the brief, check for typos", by hand, every time - People who write in browser editors rather than in Word — consistency tools have historically been Word add-ins, which is no help when the article only ever exists in a browser tab ■ What it does not do (stated plainly) - It is not a grammar checker and does not rewrite your sentences or judge your style - It reports mixtures, not individual mistakes. If the whole article says "web site", nothing is flagged — it becomes a finding only once "website" appears too. To rule a form out every time, add it to a preset with an arrow ("web site → website") - It does not check facts - Some pages cannot be read. There is a paste-in box for those, so please use that instead ■ Early access Proofkit is in early access, and every feature is free to use. If you install during this period, everything you have now stays free for you permanently — features already in your hands will not be taken away. When an end date is set, it will be announced here and in the extension's help page.
