Overview

Lock your whole Chrome profile with a password. Windows close on lock and reopen as you left them when you unlock.

ProfileVault locks your whole Chrome profile behind a password. Click the toolbar icon, or press Alt+Shift+L, and ProfileVault closes every browser window and opens one small locked window with only a password prompt. Enter your password and your windows reopen with the same pages, in roughly the same positions and sizes. WHAT YOU GET Lock with one click or a keyboard shortcut you can change at chrome://extensions/shortcuts Auto-lock when Chrome starts, after an idle time you choose, or when your computer's screen locks. Each one is its own setting. Unlock with your password, a 6-digit code from an authenticator app, or a one-time backup code Optional unlock with your computer's own sign-in (such as Windows Hello or Touch ID), where your computer supports it. ProfileVault never sees your face or fingerprint. Tabs, pinned tabs, the active tab and window positions are restored when you unlock Light, dark or follow-system theme Turn locking off on one computer without affecting your other computers PRIVACY No account, no ad or analytics code, and no servers of ours. ProfileVault makes no network requests of its own. Your password is stored only as a salted hash. Your lock settings and recovery data sync through Chrome Sync, the same way other Chrome data does. Full details are in the privacy policy linked on this page. GOOD TO KNOW ProfileVault is a convenience lock that discourages casual access to an unattended computer. It is not a replacement for your operating system's login. Someone who knows how to open Chrome's developer tools on the extension, or who has access to your operating system account, can get around it. Locking closes your windows and unlocking reopens the same pages. Unsaved form text, scroll position and video position are not preserved, so save your work before locking. Incognito windows are only locked if you turn on "Allow in Incognito" for ProfileVault. Incognito tabs are never restored. Chrome Sync is not end-to-end encrypted unless you set a sync passphrase in Chrome's own settings. Chrome will show a "Read your browsing history" warning when you install, because ProfileVault needs the addresses of your open tabs to restore them after unlock. They are kept only on your computer.
