**Stop sites opening tabs you never asked for.** Some sites — streaming and sports-stream sites especially — open a handful of tabs the moment you press play. Ordinary ad blockers often miss these, because they are not requests to a recognisable ad domain. They are behaviours: a `window.open` call hidden in a click handler, an invisible link layered over the play button so your first click is stolen, or a hidden link that a script clicks on your behalf. PopGuard blocks the behaviour, not just the destination. **How it decides** A web page can fake almost anything, but it cannot fake the browser's own record of a real click. So PopGuard asks a simple question of every new tab: did you actually ask for this? - Cmd-click, Ctrl-click or middle-click — always allowed. You clearly meant it. - A normal click on a link that leads where the tab is going — allowed. - A small sign-in or share window opened right after a real click — allowed, so logging in with Google or sharing to X keeps working. - Anything else — the tab is closed, and listed so you can see what it was. One click opens one tab, so a script cannot ride a single click into twenty. **What it removes** - Pop-ups and popunders, including the ones that open blank and redirect later - Invisible overlays placed over play buttons to harvest your first click - Sticky banners, corner video ads and scroll-following rails - Cookie-banner and interstitial scroll locks that stop you scrolling the page - Around 28,000 network rules covering popunder networks, EasyList, EasyPrivacy and common annoyances Banners layered over the video inside a third-party player are removed too. **When it gets something wrong** Aggressive blocking gets things wrong sometimes, so nothing is hidden from you. Trust a site and PopGuard is not loaded on it at all. **Keyboard shortcuts** - Alt+Shift+P — open the panel - Alt+Shift+B — turn PopGuard on or off - Alt+Shift+T — trust or protect the current site - Alt+Shift+O — clear overlays and floating ads on the current page Alt+Shift+O matters if you navigate by keyboard: an overlay covering the page cannot be reached with Tab and cannot be clicked, so this clears it directly. Every control is labelled for screen readers, and results are announced rather than only shown. **Honest limits** - Ads burned into the video picture itself cannot be removed. There is nothing in the page to remove — they are part of the video. - Filter lists are bundled with each release rather than fetched live, so they update when the extension updates. The pop-up and overlay blocking does not depend on lists and never goes stale. **Your data stays on your device** PopGuard has no servers, no analytics and no accounts.
