Overview

Learn pronunciation by hearing any text on any webpage. Hover or select text to hear it spoken aloud.

SpeakPeek turns any webpage into a pronunciation tutor. Hover over a word or select a phrase and hear it read aloud instantly — with optional phonetic symbols (IPA for English, pinyin for Chinese) and a short definition, so you learn the sound and the meaning at the same time. Perfect for language learners, students, and anyone who reads in more than one language. Powered by WordLens. SpeakPeek's offline Chinese definitions and its ~27,000 reviewed British and American IPA transcriptions come from WordLens (单词镜) (https://infenginelabs.com/en/wordlens/), our offline photo-lookup app for students. Point your phone at a printed page, tap a word, and get its British and American pronunciation and a Chinese definition, with no network needed. It is available on the App Store and as an Android APK. — WHAT IT DOES — • Hover to speak — point at a word and a Speak button appears; click it or press Enter to listen. • Select to speak — highlight any text and speak the whole selection. • Right-click menu — "Speak with SpeakPeek" on any selection. • Phonetics — see IPA for English and pinyin for Chinese (pinyin works fully offline); other scripts use a dictionary fallback. With Chinese definitions on, English IPA comes offline from ~27,000 reviewed British and American transcriptions, matched to your English voice and listing each reading by part of speech (record: n. /ˈrekərd/ · v. /rəˈkɔːrd/). • Definitions — show a concise meaning right next to the word. Chinese (Simplified or Traditional) definitions for English words and phrases come from a built-in offline dictionary, with word forms resolved (went → go). • Keyboard mode — move word by word with the arrow keys, build up a phrase, and speak it without touching the mouse. • Keyboard shortcuts — speak the selection, stop speaking, or toggle keyboard mode; all rebindable on your browser's shortcuts page. • Your voice, your pace — choose any installed system voice and adjust speed and pitch. • Follows your system light/dark theme. • Settings sync across the browsers you're signed in to. — LANGUAGES — The interface is available in English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Speech works with any voice your operating system provides. — DEFAULT SHORTCUTS (rebindable) — • Speak selection or hovered word: Ctrl+Shift+E (⌘+Shift+E on Mac) • Stop speaking: Ctrl+Shift+X (⌘+Shift+X on Mac) • Toggle keyboard selection mode: Ctrl+Shift+K (⌘+Shift+K on Mac) — PRIVACY — SpeakPeek does not collect, store, or sell any personal data, and it has no analytics or tracking. Speech is produced by your browser's built-in voices. Phonetics and definitions are on by default and can be turned off in the popup. Chinese pinyin and Chinese definitions of English words come from data built into the extension and are looked up entirely on your device. For English definitions, other languages, or words the built-in dictionary lacks, only the single word you look up is sent to public dictionary services (Free Dictionary API and Wiktionary) to fetch its pronunciation or meaning. Made for learners. Hear it, see it, say it. — WHAT'S NEW IN 1.1.0 — • Reviewed British and American IPA: about 27,000 hand-checked transcriptions, shown offline and matched to your English voice (British, Australian and other non-US voices show UK IPA; others show US). Words with several pronunciations list each one by part of speech. • Offline Chinese definitions: Simplified or Traditional Chinese meanings for English words and phrases, with word forms resolved (went → go). On by default for new installs; change it under Definition language. • Cleaner settings: a grouped popup, a live list of your keyboard shortcuts, and a voice list filtered by language. • Smoother on the page: the Speak button and definition bubble stay on screen, plus fixes for Enter, voice loading and keyboard mode. The dictionary and IPA come from WordLens, our offline photo-lookup app for students on iPhone and Android: https://infenginelabs.com/en/wordlens/
