Takt — Auto Tab Group Manager
Overview
Tab organizer that auto-groups tabs by your rules, blocks duplicates and frees memory. All local: no account, no telemetry.
Set a rule once. Every matching tab lands in a named, colour-coded Chrome group the moment it opens. Duplicate tabs get closed before they pile up. Idle tabs unload to free memory. All automatically, no manual actions. Your tabs stay on your machine: no account, no analytics, no tracking. Takt turns a crowded tab window into something you can read at a glance. You tell it how you work — by URL, by category, or by letting Chrome's built-in AI sort your tabs — and it keeps every window tidy from then on. https://taktabs.com ✨ FREE — everything below works without paying 📂 Rule-based grouping Write up to 5 rules that match tabs by URL: contains, exact, or domain. Each rule names its group and picks any of Chrome's 8 colours. Tabs are filed automatically as they load. Rule order sets priority and the first match wins — reorder by dragging or with the ↑/↓ buttons. Each condition can also be negated or made case-sensitive. 🗂 Group by Category — no rules needed Takt recognises common sites across 20 categories (Development, Social, Shopping, News and more) and groups them for you. Anything it doesn't recognise goes to "Other". 🤖 Group with AI, on your device Uses Chrome's built-in AI model to sort tabs by what they actually are. The model runs locally — no tab content is ever sent anywhere. On first use Chrome downloads the model and Takt shows the progress. If the model isn't available, Takt falls back to grouping by similarity instead. 🚫 Duplicate prevention — on by default Open a link that's already in another tab and Takt closes the new one, switches you to the original, and tells you it did. Five URL matching modes decide what counts as the same page (exact, ignore #fragment, ignore query, ignore both, or origin + path). Want the duplicate anyway? Shift-click the link, use "Open in new tab (allow duplicate)" from the right-click menu, or hit "Open anyway" on the notice. ⚡ One-click tidying Group All, Ungroup All, Collapse All and Expand All — from the popup or the keyboard. Sort the tabs inside your groups by domain. Close every duplicate tab in the window at once. 🔍 See every tab The Tabs pane lists all your open tabs by group. Search by title or URL and click to jump straight there. 🧪 Check a rule before you trust it Paste a URL into the rule tester and see exactly which rule fires. Or preview which of your open tabs a rule would catch, before you save it. 💡 Suggestions Takt notices when you have several tabs from the same site and offers a rule for them. Accept or dismiss — your call. There's an AI-assisted version too, also free. 📊 Match counts Every rule shows how many tabs it has filed, with a stats view for the totals. ❄️ Manual hibernation and auto-suspend Hibernate a tab to close it completely and reclaim its memory — Takt remembers its URL, title, group, position and scroll, and one click brings it back. Free plan keeps up to 5 hibernated tabs at a time. Separately, Takt can unload idle tabs after a threshold you set (they stay in the tab strip and reload on click), with a list of sites to never touch. 🌍 Six languages English, French, Spanish, Italian, German and Portuguese — and you can pick the language independently of Chrome's. 💎 PREMIUM — $3/month or $30/year (2 months free) 🚀 Advanced rules Unlimited rules. Glob patterns and regular expressions. Match on the page title, not just the URL. Combine up to 10 conditions per rule with AND/OR. 📈 No group limit The free plan creates up to 5 tab groups in Category and AI modes — counting every group already open in your browser. Premium removes the limit. It also adds an "Others" catch-all group for whatever stays ungrouped, sorting by domain across all your windows, and auto-collapsing groups in your other windows as you switch. ❄️ Automatic hibernation Let Takt fully close idle tabs on its own, on your schedule, or when a window goes past a tab limit you choose. Up to 200 hibernated tabs. 🔎 Quick Switch Press Alt+Shift+Space anywhere in Chrome — including pages extensions normally can't touch, like chrome://extensions. Search your open tabs, your hibernated tabs and, if you grant permission, your browsing history. Arrow keys to move, Enter to jump. No mouse. 💾 Sessions Snapshot your whole workspace — every window, its groups, its loose tabs and its hibernated tabs — as a named session. Restore it into a new window or over the current one. Rename sessions, or let Takt save one automatically when you close a window. Up to 50, stored on your machine. 📂 Group actions Close, bookmark or move a whole tab group, from the options page or the right-click menu. And create a rule straight from any tab with a right-click. 📉 Resource dashboard Per-tab memory estimates, A–F health scores per group, background request counts and a system memory bar. Set a memory budget per group and Takt unloads the tabs that blow it. Some of these need optional Chrome permissions you grant from Settings; without them those readings stay empty. Nothing is measured by an external service. 👤 Profiles and schedules Keep separate rule sets for Work, Personal or Research. Switch in one click, or let Takt switch them by time of day and day of week. 🔄 Backup and sync Export your rules, settings, profiles, sessions and hibernated tabs as one JSON file and import it anywhere. Or point Takt at a folder — including one that Google Drive, Dropbox or iCloud already syncs for you — and it keeps itself up to date in the background. Direct Google Drive sync is available too, and writes only to Takt's private app storage, never to your own Drive files. 🔒 Privacy, precisely Your tabs and page content stay on your machine. AI grouping uses Chrome's on-device model, so nothing about what you're reading is sent anywhere. Takt contacts one server: the licence check that tells it whether you're on the free or paid plan. That runs at startup and every 15 minutes, on both plans. If you connect Google Drive sync, Takt also talks to Google Drive — with your account, into its own private app storage. That's the complete list. No analytics. No telemetry. No tracking. No Takt account to create. Every permission beyond the basics is optional, off until you turn it on, and explained in Settings. ⌨️ Keyboard shortcuts - Group All: Alt+Shift+G - Ungroup All: Alt+Shift+U - Collapse All: Alt+Shift+C - Quick Switch: Alt+Shift+Space (Premium) - Expand All: assign your own at chrome://extensions/shortcuts - All shortcuts are remappable in Chrome settings. Built independently. No VC funding, no growth team. Your tabs are nobody's business but yours.
