Overview

Pinyin Typing. Smart Backspace with syllable recognition. Support for most websites. See details in the description.

Pinyin Type is an extension that helps you type pinyin. When you type a syllable followed by a tone number (1–4), it automatically turns into diacritic pinyin (ma1 → mā, ni3hao3 → nǐhǎo, lve4 → lüè) with Smart Backspace that recognizes syllables and removes only the tone. Works offline in standard input fields and most basic contentEditable areas; in RTE editors (where keystrokes are intercepted), auto-tones are available, while Smart Backspace is unavailable. Not supported: Google Docs (document workspace), Google Slides (slide workspace), Microsoft Teams (chat), and the system New Tab page. A detailed list of supported sites is available on the developer page. Key features (一)Automatic tone placement When you enter a syllable + digit 1–4 (and 5 for the neutral tone), the letter receives the correct diacritic according to pinyin rules. It respects finals order and syllables with the letter ü. Examples: shuang4 → shuàng, lve4 → lüè. If you made a mistake in the tone, you can press another digit or use Smart Backspace. (二)Smart Backspace Pressing Backspace after auto-replacement rolls back only the “tone” of the last syllable, not the last letter: lǎoshī → lǎoshi, mǎ → ma. This is more convenient than regular deletion and helps fix the tone “in place” (see the supported sites list on the developer's page). (三)Works in all popular web editors Supports input fields, chats, comments, search boxes, and most RTEs (rich-text editors). (四)Handy global On/Off toggle You can quickly disable the extension on all sites without removing it. The lantern icon turns gray when the extension is inactive. Who is it for * students and teachers of Chinese; * translators, editors, authors; * anyone who writes pinyin in chats, documents, notes, and comments. Advantages * Speed and convenience: type as usual (syllable + digit) and the marks appear automatically. No need to copy pinyin from BKRS or any other dictionary. * Finals order: tones are placed strictly according to pinyin orthography rules. * Two ways to correct: Smart Backspace or pressing the digit of the required tone. * Everywhere you write: support for popular sites, office suites, and services (see the list). * Privacy by default: not a single line of your text leaves the browser. Quick guide 1. Install the extension and turn on the toggle. 2. Type syllable + tone digit: ni3hao3 → nǐhǎo. 3. If you got the tone wrong — press another digit to replace it OR press Backspace once to remove the tone (on sites that support Smart Backspace). 4. If the extension gets in the way — turn off the toggle. COMING SOON: * Support for Google Docs and all websites * Ability to add a site to the exclusion list
