Pinyin & more adds real-time captions and translation to ANY video or audio on ANY website — no login, no account, no sign-up. The extension itself is free; captioning runs on your own Soniox API key (pay-as-you-go, currently ~12¢/hour). It builds the captions from the audio itself — so it works even when a video has NO subtitles at all. You're not limited to a platform's official captions (YouTube, Netflix…) or to a subtitle file you load by hand: if there's sound, it can caption and translate it. While something plays, it listens to the tab's audio, transcribes the speech in real time, and shows the original words plus a live translation into the language you choose. For Chinese audio, it also adds a Pinyin line so you can read the pronunciation — and you can tap any word in a finished sentence to see its pinyin and English meaning from a built-in offline dictionary. WHAT YOU GET • Free to use — no account or login needed • Generates captions from the audio, so it works on videos with NO subtitles — not just translating a platform's official captions or a file you load • Works on any website that has audio/video (not just YouTube) • Auto-detects the spoken language (60+ supported, even mixed in a sentence) • Translate into 60+ languages • Pinyin for Chinese, generated locally on your device • Tap-a-word dictionary for Chinese — click a word in a finished line to see its pinyin and meaning (offline CC-CEDICT, no network, no key) • Two display modes: a side panel that docks beside the page, or an overlay on the video that also works in fullscreen • Show any combination of lines: original, Pinyin, translation • Light / Dark / System themes, custom sentence colors • English and Tiếng Việt interface HOW IT WORKS / WHAT IT COSTS Speech-to-text and translation are powered by the Soniox API. You bring your own Soniox key, so you only ever pay Soniox directly — pay-as-you-go, currently about $0.12/hr of audio (new accounts may get free starter credits). Creating a key takes a minute, and there's a link and steps inside the extension's guide. Check your balance and usage anytime in the Soniox console. To save credits, it automatically pauses the connection during silence and reconnects when sound returns. HOW TO USE 1. Click the toolbar icon to open Settings (⚙) and paste your Soniox API key. Choose what to Translate To, your Display (side panel or on-video overlay), and theme — settings save as you change them. 2. Open any page with video or audio. 3. Click the toolbar icon again (or press Alt+Shift+S) to Start. Captions appear — the side panel docks at the right of the page, or the overlay sits on the video. 4. From then on you control everything on the caption window: Stop (which pauses) and resume, minimize to the edge strip, or × to end. Only the first start per page needs the toolbar icon or hotkey — that's a Chrome rule for capturing a tab's audio. 5. Choose which lines to show — Chinese, Pinyin, Translation, or any combination — using the toolbar buttons on the panel/overlay. 6. (Chinese) Tap any word in a finished line to see its pinyin and meaning. 7. Check your usage and balance anytime in the Soniox console. PRIVACY The extension collects nothing. There's no developer server and no analytics. Your audio goes only to Soniox (using your own key) to produce the captions, and your key is stored only in your browser.
