Overview

Bilingual YouTube subtitles + offline dictionary. Click a word: translation (KO/ZH/JA), IPA, CEFR. Save as FSRS flashcards.

Turn YouTube into vocabulary practice. On a video page, turn on CC and Piccard shows bilingual subtitles — English plus your language (Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French or German) rendered live over the video. Click any caption line to save it as a flashcard that replays that exact moment. Translations come from YouTube's own caption system; only the single line you click is sent onward — no transcript export, nothing automatic, and the video is never downloaded. It works everywhere else too. Select any word on any web page and a clean offline tooltip shows the definition, IPA pronunciation, and CEFR difficulty level (A1–C2) — then save it straight to a spaced-repetition flashcard with one click. WHY IT'S DIFFERENT Most "select to translate" extensions are thin wrappers around online dictionaries: they need the network, route every lookup through a server, and stop at a definition. Piccard is built for learners who actually want to remember what they look up: • Offline. Dictionaries are bundled in the extension. No network call, no tracking, works on a plane or behind a firewall. • IPA + CEFR on every word. See pronunciation and difficulty (A1–C2) instantly — most en→Korean / en→Chinese dictionaries show neither. • One click → flashcard. Save a word to Piccard's FSRS spaced-repetition deck — nothing else to install, nothing running in the background. Most popup dictionaries either can't save a word at all, or only save if you keep a separate desktop app (Anki) and an add-on running. Piccard saves straight to your deck with one click. • Privacy-first. No account, no analytics, no ads. The only thing that leaves your browser is a normal click to piccard.app when you choose to save a word or caption line. LANGUAGES • English → Korean, Chinese & Japanese (with IPA + CEFR) — built for Korean, Chinese and Japanese speakers learning English. • Japanese → English (JMdict/EDRDG). Conjugated verb forms beyond the dictionary form are not yet handled. • Korean → English (Wiktionary via kaikki.org). Dictionary-form words hit; common trailing particles (은/는/이/가…) are handled; conjugated verb forms beyond the dictionary form are not yet handled. FOR LEARNERS WHO READ — AND LISTEN Built for reading-based vocabulary mining: English news and articles, JLPT reading practice, IELTS and TOEFL prep. Look up once, save once, and let spaced repetition do the rest. PERMISSIONS For word lookup, the extension reads only the text you manually select so it can show a definition; all dictionaries are bundled offline, so no network request is made to look a word up. On youtube.com only, on video pages, it reads that video's caption track (from data YouTube has already delivered to your page) to list caption lines, and fetches the caption text using your existing YouTube session. It never downloads the video, never bypasses any access control, and never calls the YouTube Data API. The only outbound action to Piccard is opening piccard.app when you click to save a word or a caption line. It does not scan pages, record browsing history, or collect personal data.
