Overview

Capture a page or open a PDF, annotate it and save as PNG, JPEG or searchable PDF. All on your computer.

Picantex captures a web page, or opens a PDF or an image, lets you annotate it and saves the result. Everything happens on your computer. CAPTURE • The visible area • A selection you draw on the page • A single element of the page, picked with a click • The full page, from top to bottom • Web apps that scroll inside an inner section: turn on the switch when you need it • The visible area after a few seconds, to catch menus that close when you click • Stop a long capture with Esc and keep what was already captured • Or open, paste or drop an image you already have OPEN A PDF • Open a PDF from your computer, or the one shown in a tab: its pages appear as thumbnails • Choose the pages to annotate in the editor or to add to the multi-page document • The real text of the PDF comes along: copy it, and find it again in the PDFs you save • Password-protected PDFs open too • An image opened directly in a tab opens at full resolution, not as a screenshot ANNOTATE • Rectangles, circles, lines, arrows and speech bubbles • Freehand pen, for quick sketches and for circling things • Numbered steps that renumber themselves, with sub-steps (1.1, 1.2…), letters, Roman numerals, symbols or your own text • Text with colour, size, bold and italic • Highlighter, to mark a line without hiding it • Blur, pixels or a solid cover, to hide data that must not be read • Eraser: rub out parts of the image with a click or a drag • Eyedropper and colour codes, also with transparency • Copy and paste any mark, also from one capture to another • Crop, and zoom the image without shrinking the controls • Undo and redo; move, resize and delete any mark COPY THE TEXT • Drag over an area of the capture and get the real text of the page, not a guess from the image • Tables keep their columns, code keeps its indentation MULTI-PAGE DOCUMENT • Gather several captures, or images you already have, in one document • Reorder the pages, then save a single PDF or print • Pages at their original size or on A4 sheets, with long captures continuing on the next sheet • Reopen a page in the editor and update it in place SAVE AND PRINT • PNG, JPEG or PDF, in the folder you choose • Searchable PDFs: the real text of the page lies invisibly over the image, so you can search and copy it; text you covered or blurred is left out • Copy the image straight to the clipboard • Print on A4 sheets VERIFICATION TOOLS (OPTIONAL) • The SHA-256 fingerprint of every file you save: copy it, or save it as a .sha256 file that the system's own tools can check • A stamp under the image with the full address of the page and the date and time of capture, also written into the file's properties • A small page that checks whether a file still matches its fingerprint • Off until you turn them on: with them off, nothing about where an image comes from is written into the files PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Nothing is sent anywhere: screenshots are processed and stay on your computer • Picantex does not connect to any service, its own or anyone else's: the only network request is the one you ask for, when you open a PDF or an image shown in a tab, which is downloaded again from the same site • Captures are kept on your computer for 24 hours at most, and you can empty them at any time from the Help page • No account, no ads, no tracking • No third-party code, except Mozilla's PDF.js, used only to open PDFs: it runs on your computer, in a closed space, and cannot connect to the internet • Minimal permissions: Picantex sees a page only when you click its icon or its right-click menu GOOD TO KNOW • A help page explains every feature, and a ? next to the less obvious ones gives a short explanation on the spot • Very long pages are captured up to 30,000 pixels in height • The text you can copy is the text the page was showing: text inside embedded frames or drawn as an image is not included • On the browser's own pages (such as chrome://), only the visible area can be captured • A PDF open in Chrome's own viewer can only be photographed: open it with Picantex (the icon's menu offers to) to get every page and its text Available in English, Italian and Spanish; you can change language from the editor.
