Pepper: learn a language while you browse
Overview
Swaps a few words on the pages you read into Spanish, French, Italian or Portuguese. Hover to check, click to hear it.
Pepper teaches vocabulary in the margins of what you already read. Install it and it is always there: on every page you open, it swaps a few English words into the language you are learning, with nothing to click. About one word in 25, with no more than six new words on a page, each shown up to four times. Only words with one clear meaning are swapped. Bank, court and party never are, because the right translation depends on context. Nouns arrive with the right article, so "the house" becomes "la casa". Hover a word and the English appears after a moment, so you get a chance to recall it first. Click it to hear it said. Words you check come back sooner; words you read straight past come back after 1, 3, 7, 16 and 35 days. Pause it on a site with one switch, or everywhere for an hour, until tomorrow, or until you turn it back on. It skips pages that ask for a password or a card number, and pages that are not in English. Chrome will say Pepper can read and change your data on all websites. That is how it finds words and swaps them in place, on every page, as you read. It reads each page on your device, works from a dictionary built into the extension, and sends nothing about the pages you read anywhere. Your progress stays in your browser. Spanish, French, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese. Practise on any passage at pepper.lotlsoft.com/practice.
