PNG to SVG Converter — Version 4.0 Version 4.0 is a rebuild. The converter now produces genuine vector artwork, the popup has been redesigned around the way people actually use it, and a long list of defects that quietly cost users their work has been fixed. REAL VECTOR TRACING Until now, this extension did not vectorize anything. It took your PNG, encoded it, and wrapped it inside an SVG container. The file ended in .svg and opened without complaint, but it contained a single bitmap and not one vector path. It still pixelated when you zoomed in. It was roughly a third larger than the PNG you started with. And it could not be edited as shapes in any design tool. Version 4.0 replaces that with a real tracing engine. Your image is analysed, reduced to a palette, and converted into actual vector paths with fitted curves. The result scales to any size without losing sharpness, opens as editable shapes in Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma and Affinity, and is usually far smaller than the image it came from. You choose how it traces: full colour, a limited palette, or clean black and white. Sliders control the number of colours, how much curves are smoothed, how sharp corners must be to stay sharp, and how much speckle is removed. Sharp corners stay sharp; curves stay smooth. If you preferred the previous behaviour, switch "Scalable output" off and the original image is embedded instead, exactly as before. Tracing is on by default; embedding is now an explicit choice rather than the only thing the converter could do. FIXES THAT MATTER Files opened blank in design software. The generated SVG referenced its image using a syntax that browsers accept but most professional tools do not. Illustrator, older Inkscape, and many print workflows simply dropped the image and showed an empty document. Output now follows both the older and newer SVG conventions, so it opens everywhere. The "scalable" output did not scale. Files were emitted without a viewBox, which meant they had a fixed size and could not resize properly in a web page or layout. Every file now carries one. The extension could freeze permanently. If a file could not be read — moved, deleted, or on a disconnected drive — the app stopped dead. The Convert button stayed disabled, the row spun forever, and no error appeared. The only escape was closing and reopening, which discarded everything queued. Every failure path now completes and reports itself. Batch downloads went missing. Converting several files fired a rapid burst of downloads that Chrome throttles, so some never arrived — while the interface showed a success tick for every one of them. Batches now arrive as a single ZIP, and success means the file reached your disk. Large images crashed the popup. Nothing checked file size or dimensions, so a big image could exhaust memory and take the entire queue down with it. Limits are now enforced up front with a clear message. Errors said nothing. Any failure produced the same anonymous red icon: no reason, no detail, no retry, nothing in the console. Each failure now names its cause on its own row, offers a retry where one would help, and the rest of the batch continues. Removing a file did not remove it. Deleting a row mid-conversion still converted and downloaded that file. The queue is now locked correctly while work is running. Also fixed: object URLs that were never released; a file picker that leaked whenever you cancelled it; SVGs sized only by viewBox converting to blank images; invalid manifest keys; a blurry toolbar icon; console errors on every open; and translated text written into the page unsafely. NEW IN THE POPUP Drag files anywhere onto the window, or paste from the clipboard. The file dialog is now the fallback, not the only route in. Every queued file shows a thumbnail, its dimensions and its weight — and once converted, the thumbnail becomes the result, so each row is its own before-and-after. Click it to open the result full size. One button, four states: Choose, Convert, Converting 2 of 3, Download all. The next step is always the primary action. Converted files wait in the list with Save and Copy SVG beside them. Automatic saving is now opt-in, so finishing a batch no longer fires downloads at you. Conversion runs off the main thread with per-file progress and a working Cancel, so the window stays responsive. Your queue survives the popup closing. Right-click any image on any page and convert it directly. A settings page holds the advanced controls, an output optimizer, filename patterns, dark mode and a history of recent conversions. PRIVACY Everything runs inside your browser. No image is uploaded, no server is contacted, and the extension works with no internet connection at all. It requests no access to your browsing data on any website.
