Penguin Input — 企鹅输入法

Offline Chinese pinyin input for any text box. Local dictionary, no per-keystroke network calls, and it remembers words you create.

Type Chinese with pinyin in any text box on any site — a search field, a comment box, a web mail composer, a rich-text editor. The candidate bar appears under the caret and only the finished characters go into the page, so it behaves inside React inputs and editors that react to every keystroke. The interaction is the familiar one: type pinyin, pick from a numbered candidate bar. What is different is the two things below. IT DOES NOT GO TO THE NETWORK WHEN YOU TYPE SOMETHING IT HAS NOT SEEN An input method that leans on a server for anything it has not seen stalls on a slow connection and fails on no connection at all — and an unusual name, or a whole sentence typed in one breath, is exactly the sort of thing that tends to be unfamiliar. Penguin Input ships a dictionary of 39,000 pinyin keys, and when no single entry matches what you typed it works out the rest locally, composing the sentence from its individual syllables in well under a millisecond. Typing never causes a network request. There is no cloud, no account and no telemetry. The only requests this extension ever makes are dictionary downloads you start yourself. IT KEEPS THE WORDS YOU MAKE A word you assemble character by character is normally forgotten the moment you stop typing. Penguin Input stores it, together with its pinyin, so the next time you spell that word it is waiting as the first candidate. Everything you pick is remembered, and a word you build is kept as a word rather than as a string of unrelated characters. Settings → Your words lists them, with search, editing, bulk add, export and import. They live in your browser profile; export moves them to another machine. MORE VOCABULARY, DOWNLOADED ONCE Extra dictionaries are downloaded once and then used offline, instead of a server being consulted on every keystroke. Settings → Dictionaries installs them from their own open-source projects: • 常用汉字 8105 — 8,500 characters with modern frequencies • 扩展汉字 41448 — rarer characters, for names and classical text • 基础词库 base — around 540,000 modern words • 扩展词库 ext — places, companies, people, titles • 腾讯词库 tencent — vocabulary published by Tencent AI Lab • 短语读音表 — 47,000 checked phrase readings A URL to a Rime dictionary, a reading list or a plain word list works too. Each one is converted in the page and stored locally; nothing is fetched again afterwards. TYPING Full pinyin and half-typed pinyin both match, so the candidates narrow as you spell rather than only once a syllable is complete. Initial-only abbreviations go through the same matcher and can be switched on under Settings when you want them. • Space — take the highlighted candidate • 1–9 — pick by number • ← → — move the highlight • − = · PgUp PgDn — change page • Enter — keep the letters exactly as typed, for anything that is not Chinese • ' — force a syllable break where the letters could be read two ways • Esc — cancel • Shift, tapped — switch between Chinese and English • Alt+Shift+P — turn the input method on or off Punctuation follows the mode: in Chinese, the punctuation keys produce their full-width Chinese forms, and the quote keys open and close in turn. Immediately after a digit they stay as typed, so decimals, thousands separators and dates come out intact. A status bar sits in the corner of the page while the input method is on — the scheme, the language, the character width and the punctuation style, each of them both a reading and a switch. The candidate bar comes in eight palettes, light and dark, and follows your system theme by default. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO • Simplified Chinese and English only. No traditional characters and no other languages — deliberately, because that is what keeps the bundled dictionary small enough to ship with the extension. • No password fields. Number, date and other structured inputs are skipped too, along with any site you list under Settings → Sites to stay out of. • If your operating system's own input method is composing, this one stands aside. The bundled dictionary is generated from rime/rime-pinyin-simp and used under Apache-2.0; the installable dictionaries stay with their own projects and licences and are downloaded by you, not redistributed here.
