PDF Scholar replaces the browser's built-in PDF viewer with a calm, reading-first reader and annotator — built for people who read to work: research articles, reports, books. Every PDF you navigate to opens in PDF Scholar as an ordinary browser tab. Set your browser as the default PDF app, and PDFs you double-click in Explorer open here too (enable "Allow access to file URLs" in the extension's details). READING — Smooth scrolling and zoom, fit width/page. Day, Sepia, Night and Night+ themes with per-theme contrast and brightness. Rotate pages, two-page spread, presentation mode. Table of contents, thumbnails, and back/forward after following internal links. Your reading position is remembered per file. ANNOTATION — Highlight, underline, strikeout, pen and marker with hold-to-straighten, shapes, sticky notes and free text. Real PDF annotations with appearance streams — they open correctly in Acrobat and other viewers. Draft-based saving: the file is only written when you save. A Notes tab groups every annotation by page, with search and export to Markdown, HTML or text. AI ASSISTANT (bring your own key) — Ask about the document and get answers grounded in it, with clickable source chips that jump to the exact sentence. Structured article summaries, explain/simplify/define from the selection menu. Works with your own Anthropic, OpenAI or Azure OpenAI key; the document is only sent when you ask a question.
