Applies a dark theme to your PDF viewer

⚠️IMPORTANT⚠️: This extension won't work until you give it permission to access file URLs. You can do so by heading to your browser's extension page and enabling file access there. ⚠️IMPORTANT⚠️: This extension will only work on PDFs that you have installed locally on your computer. If you want it to work on PDFs you find online as well i.e. http://www.africau.edu/images/default/sample.pdf, I recommend you use Arshpreet Buttar's DarkPDF extension instead @ https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/darkpdf/cfemcmeknmapecneeeaajnbhhgfgkfhp?hl=en. ⚠️IMPORTANT⚠️: Your PDF viewer should be set to light theme for this extension to work. If you try to open up a light PDF document in a dark PDF viewer, this extension is going to invert the colors for both of them. Leaving you with a dark PDF document and a light PDF viewer. You need to have both of a light PDF document and a light PDF viewer for the desired results. EDIT: As pointed out in the reviews, you can't change the theme for chrome's default PDF viewer without changing the theme of your browser (as of May 2024 at least). I use the Vimium C PDF Viewer chrome extension instead, which gives me a different PDF viewer that can have a theme independent of the browser. Put chrome in dark theme, put vimium C pdf viewer in light theme, and it should work out. You can find that extension here. https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/pdf-viewer-for-vimium-c/nacjakoppgmdcpemlfnfegmlhipddanj https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/vimium-c-all-by-keyboard/hfjbmagddngcpeloejdejnfgbamkjaeg This extension is a fork of Buttar's extension (from above) except it's one file only. ```js let darkPdfDivStyles = ` pointer-events: none; width: 100vw; height: 100vh; background-color: #e6e6e6; mix-blend-mode: difference; z-index: 1; `; let darkPdfDiv = document.createElement('div'); darkPdfDiv.setAttribute("style", darkPdfDivStyles); document.body.appendChild(darkPdfDiv) ``` EDIT: I ended up switching to Buttar's extension myself, but in case people still want this one I'll leave it up. If anyone wants to use my logo, it's public domain no attribution required (no warranty). Code is GPLv3. https://github.com/chris-straka/pdf-dark-theme

Haha, agreed. I think I changed the color because I thought it looked better for a specific PDF I was reading. After revisiting, I see that it's clearly worse and I've reverted it back to the original color. Sorry for any headaches. Please be patient while Google completes the update process for version 1.04. If you want to be able to change the color, there are better extensions I recommend instead (DarkPDF).

I have given permission for this extension to access file URLs by checking the box. Nevertheless, nothing happened when I opened a PDF file in the browser from the hard disk in my PC. I think it is a great pity that the advertised function does not work. For this reason, there is unfortunately only one star from me in the rating of this extension.

Thanks for your comment Sabrina. I downloaded it from the chrome web store for myself just now, and it seems to be working on my end so here's a few ideas I have that might help. 1. If you opened the PDFs before you downloaded the extension and enabled file permissions, then your PDFs should still be in white theme. You'll have to refresh each of your pdf tabs in order to see any changes (CTRL + R, or CMD + R). 2. You may have an existing chrome extension that is interfering with this one somehow. In the extensions page for your browser, does it show any errors for the PDF Dark Theme extension? When I sent the first version of this extension to Google, they sent it back to me saying it didn't work when I thought it did. So I flushed out the instructions page a bit more and submitted it a second time and it passed their review process. So I'm assuming that it worked for Google as well, unless there's something device specific that's giving mixed results (different browser version? different browser/device settings?). If the two suggestions from above don't help, then unfortunately the issue is outside of my expertise and I recommend trying DarkPDF instead.

"Your PDF viewer should be set to light theme for this extension to work." How do you do that in chrome ?

You can't do that yet with Chrome's default pdf viewer, unfortunately. You need to install another chrome extension to give you a different PDF viewer. I installed the vimium c pdf chrome extension which gives me a different PDF viewer. Then I set chrome -> dark theme and vimium c pdf viewer -> light theme. With both those set, everything will be dark with this extension.
