Paywall Finder
Overview
Checks open-access databases (Unpaywall, Semantic Scholar) for a free, legal version of the article you're viewing.
Paywall Finder helps you find free, legal copies of paywalled academic articles — right from your browser toolbar. HOW IT WORKS Click the extension icon while viewing an article on a publisher site (ScienceDirect, Springer, Wiley, JAMA, and most journal sites with a DOI). Paywall Finder automatically detects the article's DOI from the page — no copying or pasting required — and checks two open-access databases for a free version: - Unpaywall - Semantic Scholar If either database has a free, legal copy indexed, you'll get a direct link to open it immediately. WHAT IT DOESN'T DO Paywall Finder only surfaces what these two open databases have indexed as open access. It does not bypass paywalls, scrape restricted content, or guarantee that "no free version found" means no free version exists anywhere — some articles a publisher has made freely readable without formal open-access metadata may not appear here. When in doubt, it's always worth checking the publisher's page directly. PRIVACY Paywall Finder does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. No accounts, no tracking, no analytics. The only thing sent anywhere is the detected DOI, which goes to the two public academic APIs above — and only when you actively click the icon.
