Shows camera heading, compass direction, and pitch in Google Maps panoramas.

Panorama Compass is an independent Chrome extension that adds a discreet camera-orientation overlay to compatible Google Maps™ panoramas (street view). It displays the current heading in degrees, a 16-point compass direction, and camera pitch when available. LOCAL DATA PROCESSING To provide this feature, Panorama Compass locally processes the URL of the open Google Maps page—which may contain a place, panorama identifier, or coordinates—and the panorama camera orientation. This information never leaves your browser. It is not sold, shared, or sent to the developer or any external server. Before processing begins, the extension presents a clear disclosure and lets you accept or decline. Declining keeps camera detection inactive. FEATURES - Absolute heading from 0° to 359.9° - 16-point compass direction: N, NNE, NE, ENE, and more - Camera pitch when available - Optional center crosshair showing the viewing axis - One-click overlay visibility control - Support for Google Maps navigation without page reloads - Optional local diagnostic mode - English and French support - No account, advertising, telemetry, or analytics HOW IT WORKS When panorama orientation information is available directly from the page, Panorama Compass uses it to update the display. Otherwise, the extension reads the heading contained in the current Google Maps URL. This fallback relies on an undocumented URL format that may change or briefly lag while the camera is being rotated. Pitch obtained through this fallback is experimental. If no reliable orientation is available, the extension displays “Searching…” instead of generating an estimate. PRIVACY Panorama Compass does not transmit URLs, coordinates, panorama identifiers, camera measurements, or preferences. Only your consent choice and display settings are stored locally using Chrome’s extension storage. When diagnostic mode is explicitly enabled, the extension may inspect a limited set of page accessibility labels and print technical information in the local DevTools console. This information is never transmitted.
