Overview

Generate harmonious color palettes, extract them from any website or image, and pick colors from the screen.

Palette Vault is a color toolkit that lives in your toolbar. Build a palette, pull one out of a photo, lift the colors off the site you are reading, or grab a single color from anywhere on your screen. Everything runs on your own machine. No account, no sign-up, no analytics. PICK A COLOR FROM ANYWHERE Click the eyedropper and then click any pixel on the page. The hex code goes straight to your clipboard, and the color is kept in a short list of recent picks so you can come back to it. Build a palette around anything you picked with one button. GENERATE A PALETTE Four colors that belong together, in one click. Keep rerolling until something lands. Palettes are built in OKLCH, a color space designed so that equal steps in lightness look equal to the eye, which is why the four colors read as a set rather than as four unrelated values. PULL COLORS OUT OF AN IMAGE Drop a photo into the popup, or paste one from your clipboard, and get the colors that actually define it. The colors are clustered by how they look, not sampled at random, so you get the ones that carry the image instead of whatever happened to sit under a fixed grid. You can also right-click any image on any page and choose "Extract palette from this image" without opening the popup at all. TAKE THE COLORS OFF A WEBSITE Open any site, hit Scan, and see the colors it is actually built from. Useful for matching a brand, auditing your own work, or finding out what a design you like is really made of. COPY IT IN THE FORM YOU NEED Click a single swatch to copy its hex. Take a whole palette as any of: - a hex list, for pasting into a message or a doc - an rgb list - CSS custom properties, ready for a :root block - a JSON array, for dropping into code KEEP WHAT YOU LIKE Save any palette to a local collection and come back to it later. It is stored in your browser, so there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to sync. A PALETTE ON EVERY NEW TAB New tabs show a fresh palette. Click a band to copy it, save the ones worth keeping, or move on to the next. LIGHT AND DARK A theme toggle that is remembered between sessions. WHAT IT ASKS FOR, AND WHY The permission list is deliberately short. - storage: keeps your saved palettes and recent picks on your own machine - activeTab: access to the tab you are on, only at the moment you click the extension, so it can read that page's colors or run the eyedropper - scripting: places the eyedropper overlay and the page scanner into that tab - contextMenus: adds the one right-click entry for images There is no host permission. The extension cannot see the sites you visit, and it has no standing access to any page. It only ever looks at the tab you point it at, at the moment you point it there. The only network request it ever makes is downloading an image you explicitly asked it to analyze, and only when that image cannot be read from the page directly. Nothing about you is sent anywhere, because there is nowhere to send it to: the extension has no server. FREE, WITH NO CATCH No paid tier, no trial, no attribution required. Colors cannot be owned, and anything you make here is yours to use, commercially or otherwise. Palette Vault also exists as a website, with a much larger catalog of palettes, a page for every named color, and more tools: https://palettevault.github.io
