Pagesong: Read Aloud with a Natural Voice
1 rating
)Overview
Listen to web pages in a natural English voice. The voice runs in your browser, and page text is never sent anywhere.
Pagesong reads web pages aloud in a natural-sounding English voice. The voice is generated inside your browser, on your own computer. The text you listen to is never sent to a server, and there is no account to create. What it does • Reads the main text of a page, or only the part you select • Highlights the sentence being read • Scrolls along with the reading. Scroll the page yourself and it stops following; "Back to reading" takes you back • Pause, resume and stop from a small panel on the page, or from the toolbar popup • Reading speed from 0.5× to 2×, in steps of 0.1. A change applies from the next sentence • Six English voices: Heart, Bella, Michael and Fenrir (American), Emma and George (British) • Start from the toolbar button, from "Read aloud with Pagesong" in the right-click menu on selected text, or with Alt+Shift+R • The voice works without an internet connection once Pagesong is installed How to use it 1. Click the Pagesong button in the toolbar. To keep it visible, pin it from Chrome's extensions menu (the puzzle-piece icon). 2. Click "Read this page". To hear only part of a page, select that text first. 3. Use the panel in the bottom-right corner of the page to pause, stop, change the speed, or return to the current sentence. Requirements and limits • Chrome 120 or newer on a desktop computer • The voice model is included, so the download is about 300 MB • Speech is generated by your computer's processor, so its speed depends on your computer. On slower computers there may be short pauses between sentences • The voice stays loaded in memory while Chrome is open, so later reads start quickly. The first read after starting Chrome takes several seconds • English voices only. Text in other languages is read with English pronunciation • Reads up to about 20,000 characters (roughly 3,000 words) at a time. Text beyond that is not read • Cannot read Chrome's own pages (such as Settings), the Chrome Web Store, or PDFs opened in Chrome's built-in viewer. Text inside embedded frames and form fields is not read Privacy Pagesong reads the text of a page only when you start reading. It turns that text into speech inside your browser and makes no network requests, so the text is never sent to the developer or to anyone else. It saves only your settings and the status of the current read. No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking.
