OtakuMesh watches for anime playing in your browser and keeps your progress on AniList, MyAnimeList, and Kitsu updated automatically — no more opening three tabs and clicking "+1 episode" by hand every time you finish something. WHY INSTALL THIS If you track your anime watching, you already know the friction: you watch an episode, then you have to remember to go update AniList. Or MAL. Or Kitsu, if you use all three. Miss a few episodes and your lists drift out of sync with what you've actually watched, and catching them back up is tedious enough that most people just... don't. OtakuMesh removes that step entirely. Watch the episode. That's it. Your lists catch up on their own, in the background, across every service you've connected — no app-switching, no manual entry, no remembering to do it later. HOW IT WORKS This extension is the detection half of OtakuMesh. It runs quietly in the background while you browse, and when it notices a video playing with a page title that looks like an anime episode ("Episode 12," "Ep. 12," "S1E12," and similar patterns), it reports that to the free OtakuMesh desktop app running on your own computer. The desktop app is the half that actually does the syncing — it's what talks to AniList, MyAnimeList, and Kitsu, using your own connected accounts, and it's where your watch history actually lives (in a local database on your machine, not on any server we run). This extension itself never talks to AniList/MAL/Kitsu, and it never talks to any remote server anywhere. Every single request it makes goes to http://localhost, to the desktop app sitting on the same computer. There's no backend in the middle collecting anything. You'll need the desktop app installed and running for the extension to actually do anything — it's free, open source, and available at https://github.com/WyrmStudios/OtakuMesh. The extension is not useful on its own; think of it as this app's eyes in the browser. WORKS ON WHATEVER SITE YOU'RE ALREADY USING OtakuMesh doesn't ship with a fixed list of "supported" streaming sites, and it never will by design. Instead of hardcoding rules for specific sites (which breaks the moment a site redesigns its page), it looks for two general things on any page: a video that's actually playing, and a page title that encodes an episode number. If both are there, it works — regardless of which site you're on, including sites we've never heard of and sites that didn't exist when this was written. This also means it keeps working when you switch sites mid-season, or when your usual site goes down and you find a mirror. You don't have to reconfigure anything. WHAT ELSE THE COMPANION APP DOES Once paired, the desktop app handles the parts you'd otherwise do by hand: • Pushes your progress to AniList, MyAnimeList, and Kitsu automatically as you watch • Flags real disagreements between your local progress and what's already on a site (say, if you updated MAL from your phone) so you can resolve them instead of quietly overwriting either one • Lets you tag, rate, and organize your list locally • Can match watched shows to local video files or a preferred streaming site so you can jump straight to "Play Next Episode" • Keeps a history of every sync it's performed, so nothing happens invisibly WHAT THIS EXTENSION DOES NOT DO • It does not host, stream, mirror, embed, or link to any video content. It only reads text and playback state already present on a page you opened yourself. • It does not collect, store, or transmit anything to us. We don't operate a server your data passes through — there's nothing to log, sell, or leak, because it never leaves your computer. • It does not use analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, or advertising of any kind. • It does not work by itself. Without the desktop app running and paired, it detects nothing usable. PERMISSIONS, IN PLAIN TERMS • Runs on all sites (with access to embedded frames) — needed because episode detection has to work on any site, and some sites play video inside an embedded frame from a different host rather than on the main page. • Local storage — remembers the pairing connection to your desktop app, and briefly queues a detected episode if the desktop app happens to be closed at that moment, so it can send it once you reopen it. • Alarms — checks about once a minute whether the desktop app is still reachable, so the extension's popup can show accurate connection status. • Localhost access — the only network permission this extension has. It is how the extension talks to your own desktop app, and it is not used for anything else. We don't run a server, so there's no OtakuMesh-operated place your watch data could be collected, breached, or sold from, even in principle.
