Overview
Select a word on any page to see where it comes from, without leaving the page.
See where English words come from, right where you read them. Select a word on any web page and a small OpenEtymology icon appears next to it. Click the icon and a compact card opens beside the word, with no new tab and no leaving the page. It shows: • Pronunciation: US and UK IPA • Structure: the word's parts and what they mean, e.g. com (with) + pan (bread) → companion • Origin: a short, readable history of the word, with "More" for the full note • Meaning: the core definition in a single line KEY FEATURES • Inline lookup on any page: select a word, click the icon, read the card. Close it with Esc, the × button, or a click elsewhere. • English–English or English–Chinese: switch dictionaries with the EN | 中 toggle on the card or in the toolbar popup. Your choice is remembered. If a word has no entry in one dictionary, the card offers the other. • Saved words: click the star to keep a word for later review. The extension remembers the definition you saw, the sentence you found it in, and the page it came from. • Review and export: open "Saved words" to search and sort your list, delete entries, and export it as a CSV spreadsheet or a ready-to-import Anki deck. • Toolbar popup: type any English word to look it up without selecting text. • Light and dark: the card matches the page you're reading, and the popup and Saved words page follow your system theme. • Readable by design: all text meets WCAG AA contrast. HOW TO USE 1. Select (double-click) an English word on any page. 2. Click the OpenEtymology icon that appears above it. 3. Read the card. Use EN | 中 to switch dictionaries, or ☆ to save the word. 4. Open the toolbar button → "Saved words" to review or export your list. WHERE THE DATA COMES FROM Entries come from OpenEtymology (https://openetymology.com), a free English etymology dictionary with more than 54,000 English–English and English–Chinese entries. PRIVACY • Nothing is sent when you select text. Only when you click the icon (or search in the popup) is that single word sent to openetymology.com to fetch its entry, without cookies and without the address of the page you're reading. • Saved words, with their sentence, page title and address, stay in your browser's local storage. They're never uploaded, and you can delete them at any time. • No accounts, no ads, no analytics, no tracking. Works on regular web pages (http and https). The icon doesn't appear for text you're editing (text fields and editors). Chrome doesn't run extensions on browser pages such as chrome:// or in the Chrome Web Store. — 简体中文:在任意网页选中英文单词,点击旁边出现的 OpenEtymology 小图标,即可在当前页面查看音标、构词、词源和释义。支持英英/英汉切换、收藏生词(自动记录原句与来源网页),并可导出为 CSV 或 Anki 卡片。查词时只会把所选单词发送到 openetymology.com;收藏只保存在本地浏览器中。
