Overview

Open ordinary web links in a new tab, with reliable per-site controls.

Open link in new tab gives you a predictable way to open ordinary web links in separate tabs without repeatedly using a context menu or keyboard shortcut. It is enabled by default and keeps your preferences after Chrome restarts. A compact toolbar popup provides the controls you use most often, while the settings page lets you fine-tune behavior without unnecessary complexity. KEY FEATURES • Open ordinary HTTP, HTTPS, and local file links in a new tab • Choose whether new tabs open in the foreground or background • Place each new tab next to the current tab or at the end of the tab strip • Apply the behavior to all links or external links only • Create exact-domain and wildcard per-site rules • Temporarily disable the extension globally with Alt+Shift+O • Keep Chrome's native behavior for Ctrl/Cmd, Shift, and Alt clicks • Leave same-page anchors and download links unchanged by default • Import and export settings as JSON • Use a clear interface with automatic light and dark themes BUILT FOR MODERN WEBSITES The extension handles links when they are clicked instead of rewriting every page. This makes it compatible with links added dynamically by many single-page applications and with links inside open Shadow DOM components. PRIVACY BY DESIGN Open link in new tab has no analytics, advertising, accounts, remote code, or external services. Link destinations are handled locally only after you click. Preferences and per-site rules stay in Chrome's local extension storage. BROWSER LIMITATIONS Chrome does not allow extensions to run on browser-internal pages, the Chrome Web Store, browser UI, or bookmark clicks. Controls implemented entirely in JavaScript without a real link destination may also be unavailable. The extension clearly reports these browser-enforced limitations instead of claiming otherwise.
