Overview

Open links in a fresh, throwaway Quicksand VM from the right-click menu.

Open suspicious or untrusted links in a throwaway virtual machine instead of on your own computer. Open in Quicksand adds an "Open in Quicksand" item to the right-click menu of links. Choose it and the link opens in a fresh VM running a browser such as Chrome or Firefox, on your Quicksand server. The page loads and runs inside the VM, and you see and use it from the VM's console in a browser tab. When you're done, the VM is destroyed, along with anything the page left behind. Useful for: • Checking links from phishing reports, tickets and unfamiliar emails • Visiting sites you don't trust, or that you'd rather didn't see your own machine • Testing pages in a clean browser with no history, cookies or extensions How it works: • Right-click any http or https link and choose "Open in Quicksand". • Quicksand shows you the link and asks where to open it: a new VM (on the network you pick) or a new tab in one of your running VMs. • Nothing is deployed until you click Open, so a website can't start VMs on your behalf. • If you aren't signed in to Quicksand, you'll sign in first, and then it carries on. Requires a Quicksand server. Quicksand is a self-hosted, open-source portal for disposable VMs on Proxmox VE. This extension is a shortcut to it and does nothing without one. In the extension's options, enter your Quicksand address and the ID of a template that opens links. The template ID is shown on Quicksand's dashboard. Privacy: the extension doesn't collect, store or send any data, and it holds no passwords or tokens. It only saves your settings (server address, template and network) in your browser. When you open a link, it opens your own Quicksand server's page for that link in a new tab, and that's the only place the link goes.
