Overview

Automatically opens clicked bookmarks in a new tab, preserving your current page.

Tired of losing your current page every time you click a bookmark? This extension makes every bookmark open in a new tab by default — your current page stays exactly where it is. ❗️👇 Please read the full description below 👇❗️ 🔧 HOW IT WORKS The extension rewrites your bookmark URLs with a special prefix (newtab@) that triggers a local redirect within the extension. When you click a bookmark, the redirect is intercepted, cancelled, and the original URL opens in a new tab. Your current tab is never navigated — videos keep playing, forms stay filled, nothing is interrupted. ❗️❗️❗️UNINSTALL INSTRUCTIONS Please follow these steps BEFORE removing the extension: 1. Open the extension popup by clicking the icon in your toolbar. 2. Toggle the switch to the OFF position. 3. Wait for the status to confirm bookmarks have been restored. You can now safely uninstall the extension. This will restore all your bookmarks to their original URLs and prevent any unexpected behavior after removal. 🌐 FEATURES Open all bookmarks in a new tab automatically. Toggle the extension on/off at any time — bookmarks are restored instantly. Settings sync across all your Chrome devices automatically. Choose whether the new tab gets focus or opens in the background. Place new tabs at the end of the tab bar or right next to the current tab. New bookmarks are automatically handled while the extension is active. Smart empty-tab detection — if your current tab is a blank new tab, the bookmark opens there instead of creating another tab. Works with Gmail, Outlook, and other high-security domains that normally block the redirect trick. No data collected, no analytics — everything runs locally within the extension. Clean, dark-themed settings popup with English and Chinese language support. ✅ OPEN SOURCE This extension is fully open source. You can review the code, report issues, or contribute at: https://github.com/sssstf0rest/Open-Bookmarks-in-New-Tab ⚠️ PLEASE NOTE This extension will modify your bookmark URLs after installation — this is the only way to make bookmarks consistently open in a new tab. For most bookmarks, a prefix is added to the URL: https://example.com becomes https://newtab@example.com For certain domains (Gmail, Outlook) where Chrome strips this prefix, bookmarks are wrapped through a redirect page: https://mail.google.com/... becomes https://newtab@sssstf0rest.github.io/...?url=https://mail.google.com/... Both formats are harmless and invisible during normal use. Bookmarks for internal pages (chrome://, edge://) are not modified. You can always revert your bookmarks to their original URLs — just open the extension popup and toggle the switch to OFF. ⚠️ KNOWN LIMITATIONS Opening a bookmark while on a streaming page (e.g. Spotify, YouTube) may briefly interrupt media playback. This is a Chrome platform limitation — use Ctrl+Click or middle-click as a workaround. Gmail and Outlook bookmarks may lose their original favicon/thumbnail due to the redirect page wrapping.
