Overview

Shows a nutrition score on Walmart grocery pages for enrolled participants in a Cornell/Stanford research study.

Online Grocery Study is a research tool built by researchers at Cornell University and Stanford University. It is used only by people who have enrolled in an approved study (Cornell IRB protocol IRB0151136) and who have been given a personal study code. What it does While an enrolled participant shops on walmart.com, the extension adds a small nutrition label next to grocery products. The label shows a 0-100 nutritional score and a short plain-language rating, computed from the product's published nutrition facts and ingredient list. On the checkout page it can also display the participant's study compensation code. Who it is for This extension is not a general-purpose shopping tool. It is distributed unlisted and is intended only for enrolled study participants. Without a study code entered through the study's survey, the extension shows nothing and records nothing. What it collects For enrolled participants only, and only during the study's shopping exercise, the extension records which products were shown a label and which products were added to the cart. This is linked to the participant's anonymous study code, never to a name, email address or Walmart account. Participants may also enter optional household information (household size, dietary preferences, health conditions) which is used to tailor the nutrition label. Collection stops automatically as soon as the participant enters their return code in the study survey, and participants can uninstall the extension at any point. The extension does not read browsing history, does not touch any site other than walmart.com and the study's own survey pages, does not show advertising, and does not sell or transfer any data.
