Lowers the static-pixel exposure behind OLED burn-in: auto-dim, true black dark mode, pixel shift, idle fade. Zero network calls.

Your OLED laptop or monitor cost between $1,200 and $3,000, and burn-in is excluded from most panel warranties. The hardest thing you can ask that panel to display is a web browser: the same nav bar, the same sidebar, the same bright logo, at the same pixels, at the same brightness, eight hours a day. OLED Guard reduces the static-pixel exposure your browser puts on that panel — and then shows you the numbers, so you can check the work instead of trusting a claim. It runs entirely on your machine. No account, no subscription, no analytics, and no network requests at all except to the payment processor if you decide to upgrade. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WHAT IT DOES NOT DO ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Read this part first. It's the part most extensions leave out. • It does not prevent, cure, or reverse burn-in. No browser extension can, and any that says otherwise is selling you something. • It cannot reach your tab strip, address bar, bookmarks bar, taskbar, dock, or any other application. A browser extension only reaches the page content area. That is a real limit and it stays a real limit. • It does not replace the compensation cycles your display already runs in firmware. Those keep running. This works on top of them. • It is not a force-dark extension. If what you want is every website inverted, use Dark Reader — it does that better and it's free. OLED Guard runs alongside it without conflict. The popup dims itself as you drag, so you preview the effect on the control you're holding. The slider track is a luminance ramp running from pure black to the page's own average colour. ▸ PER-SITE MODES Auto, Off, or a custom dim level per website. Set it once for the sites you leave open all day; every site you visit afterwards follows your global default. ▸ TRUE BLACK On sites that are already dark, the base canvas is forced to #000000 so those pixels are physically off — not dark grey, off. Elevated surfaces like cards, menus, modals, and code backgrounds are detected and left intact, so the interface keeps its depth instead of collapsing into a flat black sheet. There is no monthly plan, no annual plan, and no upsell after purchase. ▸ PIXEL SHIFT The entire page steps by one pixel at a time through a sixteen-point lattice, cycling roughly every ninety seconds. It's the same principle as the pixel-shift feature built into modern televisions, applied to browser content: nothing sits at exactly the same coordinates indefinitely. Steps are timed to fire underneath your scroll events, so the movement is hidden inside motion you already caused. Fixed headers, sidebars, and floating buttons are detected and shifted individually so nothing tears away from the layout. On sites where the measurement gets expensive, it automatically degrades to shifting only the fixed elements rather than slowing your page down — and tells you it did, per site. ▸ STATIC-REGION DIMMING Elements that have genuinely held still — over three minutes, and bright — get dimmed individually. The ramp down takes three seconds and the restore takes four hundred milliseconds, and that asymmetry is the whole trick: it fades away slowly enough that you don't notice, and comes back the instant you look at it. ▸ LOGO AND WORDMARK DECAY Small, bright, saturated fixed marks — the exact shape of the classic burn-in complaint — get their own longer threshold and a deeper dim floor. ▸ EXPOSURE DASHBOARD A per-site leaderboard of static-pixel-hours, a thirty-day chart, cumulative dim hours, shift cycles completed, and a modelled power figure expressed in battery minutes. This is where you find out that one background tab has been doing most of the work. Every power figure is labelled as a model, inline, because actual panel draw varies with your hardware, brightness setting, and system controls. ▸ FULL X-RAY VALUES Real dwell time and real dim percentage on every detected region, live. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ HOW TO VERIFY IT'S ACTUALLY WORKING ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Three things you can check on your own screen in under a minute, without taking anyone's word for it: 1. Compare — instant A/B, both directions, on any page. 2. Show static regions — see precisely what the engine sees and how long it's been sitting there. 3. Over a sixty-two minute continuous run with every engine active on a live, heavy page: heap usage did not grow, DOM node and listener counts stayed flat, and idle CPU cost was indistinguishable from not having the extension installed. Memory overhead is roughly one megabyte per tab. There are no background timers keeping the service worker awake — the nightly statistics rollup uses a scheduled alarm specifically so nothing is pinned. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Q: Does this prevent burn-in? A: No. Nothing running inside a browser can prevent burn-in. It is uneven ageing of the organic emitters in the panel, driven by cumulative luminance over time. What an extension can do is lower how much of that cumulative luminance the browser contributes, and that is exactly what this does — no more, and it says so on its own store page. Q: Is burn-in still a real problem on modern laptop and monitor panels? A: Current panels are substantially better than early ones and run their own compensation cycles, but static high-luminance content over long periods is still the known risk factor, and most manufacturers still exclude image retention from warranty coverage. A browser is the most static-heavy thing most people display. Q: Isn't dark mode enough? A: Dark mode helps, and this extension does true black on top of it. But dark mode alone doesn't move anything — your dark sidebar and dark navigation bar still sit at exactly the same pixels for hours, and a dark grey background still has every pixel lit. True black turns them off; pixel shift stops the boundaries from staying fixed. Q: What is pixel shift and will I notice it? A: It moves the whole page content by one pixel at a time on a slow cycle, timed to coincide with your scrolling. Most people cannot see it. It ships switched off, and there's an exaggerated demo in the options page so you can evaluate it before enabling it. If you dislike it, leave it off — the rest of the extension works without it. Q: Does it work with Dark Reader? A: Yes. They do different jobs. Dark Reader inverts light websites; this reduces exposure and deepens blacks. Running both is a normal setup. Q: Will it dim my videos, games, or photos? A: No. Fullscreen and playing in-viewport video are exempted automatically, and browser-based design, photo, and colour tools are excluded by default. Any page with an open colour picker is exempted too. Q: Does it send my browsing data anywhere? A: No. There are zero network requests except to the payment processor at purchase time. No analytics library, no accounts, no telemetry endpoint. The exposure statistics live in a local database on your machine, and you can export or erase them from the options page. Q: Why does it ask for access to all websites? A: Because it writes presentational CSS into whichever page you're looking at — an overlay, a background colour, and small position offsets. It reads element geometry and computed colours to find static regions. It does not read page text, form fields, or credentials, and it has nowhere to send them if it did. Q: What's the difference between free and paid? A: Free gives you dimming, per-site control, true black, idle fade, Compare, and the static-region viewer. Pro adds pixel shift, automatic static-region dimming, logo decay, the exposure dashboard, and the full diagnostic numbers. Pro is $29.99 once, not a subscription. Q: I have an IPS, VA, or Mini-LED monitor. Is this useful to me? A: Only for comfort. It'll tell you so itself — see below. Q: What about a laptop with a self-emissive screen plugged into an LCD external monitor? A: There's a one-click switcher in the popup header, because no browser API can tell which physical display a window is currently on. Flip it when you move a window. Q: Does it work on AMOLED tablets and portable displays? A: Yes, on any Chromium browser that can install Chrome Web Store extensions on that device. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ NOT ON AN OLED? IT WILL TELL YOU ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ The first run asks what kind of display you have. Answer LCD, IPS, VA, Mini-LED, or "not sure", and OLED Guard drops into comfort mode: dimming and idle fade only, panel-care features hidden, and the paid upgrade suppressed entirely. Your screen is backlit, so it isn't affected by burn-in, and there is nothing here for you to buy. The extension will not offer you Pro and will not let you purchase it. That is a deliberate decision to sell less.
