Screwed Music
Overview
Record-style slowdown with pitch drop, tape chew and DJ stop for audio and video on any site.
Screwed slows down any audio or video in your browser the way a slowed-down record sounds: the speed drops and the pitch drops with it. Open a track, press On, and the whole web sounds slow and heavy. It works on any site that plays audio or video — music services, video sites, podcasts, radio — right in the page's own player. Nothing is downloaded or re-encoded. WHAT IT DOES • Slow and low. Set the speed from 30% to 120%. The pitch follows the speed like on vinyl; the panel shows the shift in semitones (70% is about −6.2). • Tape chew. The speed wobbles and dips like a chewed-up cassette. You choose how hard. • Dark tone. Rolls off the highs for a muffled, underwater sound. • DJ stop. Pause winds the record down over a second instead of cutting the sound — from the panel and from the site's own pause button. Play spins it back up. • Scratch. Grab the record in the panel and spin it back and forth with the mouse; the sound follows your hand, and so does the waveform in the panel. Dragging the progress bar scratches too. • Tempo. The panel listens to the track and shows its BPM — as it sounds slowed down. • Chops (experimental). A chopped & screwed trick: now and then the start of a bar plays again, like a DJ cutting between two copies of the record, and trails off into an echo. Needs a track with a steady beat. THE PANEL • Lives in Chrome's side panel, so it stays open while you switch tabs. • Shows what is playing: site, artist and title, a live waveform and a progress bar with seek. • The record spins at the real playback speed and wears the track's cover art. • Takes on the look of the site you are on — its colors, accent color and font — so it feels like part of the page. • Six languages: English, Russian, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic and French. Follows your browser language by default. SHARE A FIND The Share button copies a link to the page you are on with your settings added to it. When someone with Screwed installed opens the link, the page plays with the same speed, tape, tone and chop settings. GOOD TO KNOW • The effect is turned on per site and remembered: open the site again and it comes back on by itself. • A tab that was open before you installed the extension needs one reload — the panel offers to do it. • Keyboard shortcuts: open the panel, turn the effect on and off, slower, faster. You can change them at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. • The toolbar icon turns gray on tabs that have no audio or video. • When the effect is off, or the panel is closed, the extension leaves pages alone. • On protected (DRM) streams and on audio served from another server without permission, speed and pitch still work, but the waveform, dark tone, tempo, chops and scratch sound are not available — the browser does not give extensions access to that audio. • Live calls and webcam streams are never touched.
