Vocalabs: Highlight to Flashcard
Overview
Highlight any word on the web to make a flashcard, then review it anywhere with science-backed spaced repetition.
You read something interesting, look up a word, and forget it by the next day. Vocalabs catches those words while you are reading and brings them back until they stick. Highlight any word or phrase on any page. Vocalabs saves it as a flashcard with its definition, its pronunciation, and the actual sentence you found it in — so you learn the word in the context where it mattered to you, not from a list someone else wrote. HOW IT WORKS 1. Highlight a word while you read. Press Alt+S or use the right-click menu. 2. Vocalabs builds the card: definition, part of speech, pronunciation, and the sentence from the page. 3. Review for a few minutes a day. Press Alt+R. Each card comes back just before you would have forgotten it. The scheduling is SM-2, the spaced-repetition algorithm behind Anki and decades of memory research. Cards you find easy get out of your way. Cards you keep forgetting come back sooner. FIVE WAYS TO BE ASKED A word you can recognise is not a word you can use, so Vocalabs can ask in either direction: - The word — recall what it means - The meaning — recall the word - The sentence, with the word blanked out — recall the word - The definition and the sentence together - Mixed, so you are never answering on autopilot Turn on typing to write the answer out. You get letter-by-letter feedback showing exactly which part you had right, and a first-letter hint when you want the scaffold. WORKS OFFLINE, IN YOUR LANGUAGE Over 40,000 English words ship inside the extension, so looking one up does not wait on a network. The interface is translated into 17 languages — Arabic, Bengali, German, English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Urdu and Chinese — with right-to-left layout where it belongs. Definitions can be translated into your own language, behind a tap, so a hint is something you choose rather than something you are given. REVIEW ANYWHERE Your cards sync to vocalabs.app/app, which works on a phone and can be added to your home screen like an app. Review on the bus, add words at your desk. PRIVACY Vocalabs reads the text you highlight, and nothing else. It does not collect your browsing history, does not read pages you have not interacted with, and sends no page content anywhere — only the single word being looked up. Your cards live on your device, and sync only if you sign in. FREE, WITH MORE IF YOU WANT IT Everything above is free, including the offline dictionary and every review mode. A free account raises the card limit; Pro removes it, and there are plans for families, tutors and classrooms. If you prefer to bring your own AI key for richer definitions, you can — it goes straight to the provider you chose, and Vocalabs ships with no key of its own.
