Overview
Keep several bookmark bars - one per project or context - and switch in a click.
Bookmark Bar Switcher — one bookmark bar per context, switched in a click. Your browser only shows one bookmark bar, so everything ends up crammed into a single crowded row: work links next to personal ones next to that project you touch twice a month. Bookmark Bar Switcher lets you keep as many separate bars as you like — “Work”, “Personal”, “Project Foo”, “Reading” — and swap the one you need onto the toolbar. The active bar looks and behaves exactly like your normal bar; the rest wait out of sight until you switch. MULTIPLE BARS, ONE CLICK Keep a bar for every context and switch between them from a popup picker or a keyboard shortcut. Only the bookmarks for what you're doing right now are ever on screen. Create, rename, reorder, and delete bars from a simple Settings page — a bar can hold nested folders, not just flat links. SHARED BOOKMARKS WITH A COMMON BAR Flag any bar as “common” and pull it into the other bars you choose. Its bookmarks merge into each bar folder by folder, and the common stays the single source of truth: edit it once and every bar that uses it updates. The handful of links you want everywhere — mail, calendar, a shared team folder — live in one place instead of being copied into each context by hand. ACROSS SEVERAL COMPUTERS — WHAT IS PROTECTED, AND WHAT ISN'T If you sign into the same browser on more than one machine, your saved bars are safe. Switchers that move bookmarks in and out of the toolbar are fighting the browser's own sync, because the toolbar syncs too. This one never moves a saved bar: switching only copies a master set onto a disposable toolbar, and which bar is active is remembered per machine rather than synced. Nothing your bars depend on is shared between computers, so autosync has nothing to corrupt. The honest limit: the visible toolbar is an ordinary synced folder, and no extension can change that. If two computers are awake with different bars loaded, the browser will eventually merge what is on them and you will see a mixture. Your saved bars are untouched — switch to another bar and back, and the mixture is gone. What the extension will not do is make it worse: if it doesn't recognise what's on your toolbar, it asks before replacing it and offers to keep it as a new bar, rather than erasing it silently. The habit that avoids the whole thing: use one computer at a time, and press Save before you leave one. SWITCH THE WAY YOU LIKE Open the popup for a visual picker, or drive it entirely from the keyboard: cycle with Ctrl+Down / Ctrl+Up, or jump straight to a bar with Ctrl+Shift+1 and 2. Twelve commands in all — bind your own keys for direct jumps to bars 3 through 10. BACK UP AND MOVE BARS Export any bar to JSON, Markdown, BBCode or AsciiDoc, and import it back as a new dated copy. JSON is the complete backup; the text formats are readable files you can paste into a wiki or a README. Import always adds a bar — it never overwrites the one you already have — so restoring a backup is always safe. Use it to move bars between browsers, or to keep a snapshot before a big reorganisation. NOTHING LEAVES YOUR BROWSER No account, no sign-up, no server. It works with your normal browser bookmarks and sends nothing anywhere — and it's open source, so you can read exactly what it does: github.com/yaiol/bookmarks Saving is always something you press. The extension never writes to a saved bar on its own — partly so you stay in control, and partly because the browser gives extensions no signal about when a sync starts or finishes, so anything saving automatically would eventually be guessing. Works in Chrome and Edge. A Firefox build is available on the GitHub releases page. Interface available in 28 languages.
