Overview

Capture screenshots, full-page scrolling captures with a built-in crop editor, and tab/window/screen recordings.

Screencap is a local-first Chrome extension for capturing screenshots, stitching full-page scrolling captures, and recording your tab, window, or screen. No account or subscription needed, no cloud storage, and no analytics or telemetry collected by default. Full-page capture with three composite modes Click Full page ↓ (or ↑) and Screencap scrolls through the page, stitching each strip into one clean image. Three modes control how multi-column pages are composited: - Trimmed: keeps the header, content column, and footer; side rails and docked panels are carved out automatically - Sandwich: keeps the complete first screen on top, then continues the scrolling content below - Normal: captures the scrolling content only The last mode you pick is remembered and used everywhere—popup buttons and keyboard shortcuts alike. The capture always starts from your current scroll position, so you can capture from the top down or scroll mid-page and capture what's below. The result opens in a built-in editor showing which mode, scroll direction, and column geometry produced it. Built-in editor The editor opens every full-page capture for non-destructive review before saving. Draw a selection and the editor picks the right operation automatically: - Chop: selection touching three or more edges removes the region and shrinks the canvas - Slice: full-width or full-height strip removes the strip and joins the two halves - Redact: any other selection fills the region with black, canvas unchanged - Crop: Shift+Delete keeps only the selected region Eight handles on every selection (four corners, four edge midpoints) and full undo/redo. All editor shortcuts are remappable in Settings. Viewport screenshots Capture the visible tab as a PNG in one click. Files download automatically, named by date, domain, and time. Tab, window, and screen recording Choose your source, press Start recording, and Screencap counts down from three before it begins. Tab recording runs inside the extension. Window and screen recording open a persistent recorder window. Recordings download as MP4 when your browser supports it, with a WebM fallback. Audio from the page, microphone narration, or both can be included. The global keyboard shortcut starts and stops recordings using your saved settings—source, audio, format, and quality—without opening the popup. The source you last picked is remembered so the shortcut always uses it. Audio quality is configurable from 96 kbps (voice) to 320 kbps (near-lossless). The default is 192 kbps. Settings All recording and capture options are in the Settings page. Changes save the moment you make them (hot save)—no Save button. Audio quality, video format, resolution, frame rate, full-page mode, editor shortcuts, and file naming are all configurable. Keyboard shortcuts - Alt+Shift+S: take a screenshot of the visible tab - Alt+Shift+D: full page ↓ (current position to bottom) - Alt+Shift+U: full page ↑ (top to current position) - Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+8: start or stop a recording using saved settings (global) All shortcuts are remappable at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. Automatic file naming Every capture downloads to: Downloads/Screencap/YYYY-MM-DD/domain.com/YYYYMMDD_domain.com_HHMMSS.ext The root folder is configurable in Settings. Local and private Nothing leaves your device. No account required, no analytics, and no cloud. The only optional network activity is local diagnostic tooling for developers working on Screencap itself — a log collector and, if present, a traceact-browser relay, both at 127.0.0.1, both off by default.
