Obsidian Viewer for GitHub
Overview
Renders Obsidian ![[embeds]], [[wikilinks]] and callouts on GitHub so your backed-up vault looks like Obsidian.
Read your Obsidian vault directly on GitHub—without editing repository files. Obsidian Viewer for GitHub enhances Markdown file previews on github.com by translating common vault syntax into a familiar, readable experience. It works with public and private repositories that you can already access. WHAT IT RENDERS • Image embeds, aliases, and dimensions such as ![[image.png|300x180]] • Video, audio, PDF, and file embeds • Wikilinks with aliases, folders, headings, and block references • Foldable callouts including note, tip, warning, danger, and more • Highlights, tags, hidden comments, underline, subscript, and superscript • Dataview inline fields and supported LIST, backlink, tag, folder, and MOC queries • Optional browser-compatible JavaScript and DataviewJS output READING AND CONTROLS • Optional reading theme with improved width, typography, tables, and code blocks • Drag-to-resize embedded images, with sizes remembered locally • Automatic processing when navigating between GitHub notes without a full page reload • Interactive popup with feature switches and repository controls • Repository allowlist for choosing exactly where the extension runs • Separate per-repository authorization for sandboxed JavaScript JAVASCRIPT SAFETY JavaScript execution is disabled by default. When enabled for a trusted repository, compatible code runs in a time-limited extension sandbox without access to the GitHub page, cookies, extension APIs, or network resources. Blocks that require desktop-app APIs, Node.js, or page DOM access are not executed. Instead, the extension displays a clear notice and a syntax-highlighted source-code tab. PRIVACY • Repository files and notes are never modified • No advertising, analytics, tracking, fingerprinting, or data sales • Preferences, repository lists, and image sizes are stored locally in the browser • Page content is processed locally • Additional content requests are sent only to github.com using the user’s existing signed-in session The extension is designed for Markdown file previews on github.com. It does not target GitHub Pages websites. Independent open-source project. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Obsidian or GitHub.
