Overview

Highlight and underline local .md and .html files — your marks survive closing the tab.

Mark up what you read the way you would mark up paper. Select text, pick a color or an underline, and it stays. Close the tab, restart the browser, come back a week later — the marks are still there. WORKS ON YOUR OWN FILES, NOT JUST THE WEB Most highlighters only reach web pages. This one also works on documents opened straight from your disk: local .md and .html files, exported documentation, README files, API references, runbooks and specs. That is the reason it exists. If you read technical documentation offline, nothing else covers it well. NOTHING LEAVES YOUR DEVICE No account. No sign-in. No server. No network request anywhere in the extension. Your highlights are stored by the extension on your own machine. They are not in a cookie, so they are never sent to a website. They are not in the page's own storage, so a site cannot read them or wipe them. There is no cloud, no sync, and nothing to leak. SIX COLORS, PLUS UNDERLINE — AND THEY COMBINE Yellow, green, pink, blue, orange, purple, and a separate underline. A passage can be yellow AND underlined; pressing one never clears the other. Press the same thing again to remove it. One button clears every highlight on the page, with a confirmation step. The palette was chosen by measurement, not by eye: every color keeps text at WCAG AAA contrast, and the colors are kept apart in brightness so they stay distinguishable under color vision deficiency. IT DOES NOT BREAK THE PAGE Highlighting is drawn with the CSS Custom Highlight API rather than by wrapping your text in extra elements. Page layout is not disturbed, selections that span headings, lists and tables work correctly, and copied text stays clean. MARKS SURVIVE THE DOCUMENT CHANGING Each highlight remembers the exact text plus the words around it. When a document is edited and the passage moves, the mark is found again by matching that context. If the text is deleted, the highlight is not thrown away — it simply waits, and returns if the text comes back. Renaming or moving a local file does not lose your marks either. ALSO WORKS INSIDE EMBEDDED FRAMES Some pages render their real content in an embedded frame. Those are supported. Frames with almost no text are skipped, so ad and tracking frames cost nothing. PERMISSIONS, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE Installing asks for nothing about websites. Access is granted by you, when you want it: • Local files — Chrome keeps this behind its own switch. Open the extension's details page and turn on "Allow access to file URLs". The extension cannot do this for you; only you can. • Websites — open the toolbar popup and choose "Enable on this site" or "Enable on all sites". You can turn it off again the same way, at any time. The extension reads the address of the tab you are on only to tell you whether highlighting is available there. REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITS • Chrome 105 or newer • Chrome does not let any extension work on chrome:// pages, the Web Store, or other extensions' pages • Notes, tags and search do not exist yet • Some single-page applications rewrite their address after loading, which can make a mark harder to find again
