Overview

Learn a language from what you watch and read: dual subtitles, an instant offline dictionary, words saved to your phone.

Nim turns the video and the pages you already watch and read into language practice, without sending you to a separate app to look things up. On a video, Nim draws its own subtitle bar: the line in the language you are learning, the translation underneath, and the reading above each character. It uses the site's own subtitle track when there is one in your language, and when there is not it reads the subtitles burned into the picture, so a video with no caption file still works. Every word in the line is clickable, you can drag across several characters to ask about exactly those, and A, S and D jump to the previous line, repeat this one, and move on. Nim can also pause at the end of each line, or while a word panel is open, so you are not racing the video. Off video, rest the cursor on any word on any page and a small card answers from a dictionary held in your browser, with nothing to wait for. Click the word to keep the card open and you can save it, ask for an explanation or examples, or type your own question about the word in the sentence it came from. Select a phrase and the same card opens on the whole phrase. Hovering can stay on, be limited to while you hold Option or Alt, or be switched off, per site or everywhere. Also in the card: - Readings above the characters, as pinyin, zhuyin, or both. - Stroke order for any Chinese character, three ways: watch the strokes draw themselves, trace them over the outline, or write from memory on a blank grid, with a step strip showing the order. - Save to Nim, which sends the word, its translation, and its sentence to the Nim app on your iPhone as a flashcard. This is the only part that needs an account; everything else works signed out. Languages. Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Japanese, English and Spanish have a built-in offline dictionary: 125,000 Chinese entries from apanese words from JMdict, and about amillion English and three quarters of a million Spanish headwords from Wiktionary, answered in your browser without asking a model. Korean, French, Gered by the model instead, which means ashort wait and a request per new word. You choose what you are learning and what to translate into, from those nine. No account is needed, there is no analyti
