Overview

Save tabs in one click and restore them with groups intact. Backed up to a file you own. No account, no tab limit.

TabHold is a tab saver for Chrome. Save tabs in one click, restore tabs with their groups, order and pinned tabs, and keep a backup in a file on your own computer. Your tabs, backed up to a file you own. No limit on saved tabs. No account. HOW IT WORKS • One click saves the window. Click the TabHold icon in the toolbar and TabHold saves the tabs in the current window, opens your list, and closes the tabs it saved. To keep them open, turn off "Close tabs after saving". • Groups come back as you left them. Each group keeps its title, color and collapsed state, and the tab order and pinned tabs are kept too. • Restoring keeps your list. TabHold opens the tabs again and leaves the saved list in place, so you can reopen the same set any time. • Search everything you saved. Type part of a title or URL to find a tab across all your saved lists. • Work with single tabs. Open or remove one tab from a saved list. Removed tabs go to the Trash; restore one and it returns to its original group, as close to its original position as possible. • Pages that can't be reopened, such as chrome:// pages, are still saved. When you restore, TabHold skips them and tells you how many it skipped. WHO IT'S FOR • Research with dozens of tabs open. Save tabs from the whole window as one set, search it later by title or URL, and reopen it when you come back to the topic. • Clearing a cluttered window before a meeting or a screen share. One click saves and closes the tabs; Restore brings them back. • Keeping project sets organized. If you already sort work into Chrome tab groups, each project comes back with its name and color. • Moving to a new computer. Copy your backup file over and restore tabs from it. No account to create, no sync service to set up. • People who have lost tabs before, after a browser crash or an extension update. TabHold keeps a copy of your saved tabs in a file outside the extension when file backup is on, and keeps recent snapshots of your open windows. BUILT TO KEEP YOUR TABS SAFE Chrome deletes an extension's storage when the extension is removed, and a damaged browser database can start empty. TabHold adds safety layers on top of its own storage, and all of them are free. • File backup. Turn it on and TabHold keeps a copy of your saved tabs in Downloads/TabHold/latest.json. After your first "Back up now", it backs up automatically 5 minutes after a change and once a day. It's an ordinary file you can copy, keep or move. • Restore from a backup file. After reinstalling TabHold, or on another computer, pick latest.json and your saved tabs and Trash come back. • Automatic snapshots. TabHold also works as a simple session manager: every 5 minutes, if something changed, it takes a snapshot of your open windows. The last 10 are kept, so a window closed by mistake, or a session Chrome didn't bring back, can be reopened from a snapshot. Snapshots live inside TabHold's storage; the file backup is the copy that survives a reinstall. • Trash. Deleted tabs stay in the Trash for 30 days, and can be moved back until then. • Warning badge. If your saved data looks damaged or partly missing, TabHold shows a red "!" on its toolbar icon and pauses automatic backup, so a damaged list doesn't replace your good backup file. An orange "!" means file backup is on but paused or failing. The tooltip says why. IMPORT FROM ONETAB AND URL LISTS • Import from OneTab: use OneTab's export option, copy the list of URLs, and paste it into TabHold to import it (or pick a .txt file). • You can also import a plain list of URLs, one per line. TabHold detects the format automatically. • Before anything is saved, a preview shows how many groups and tabs will be added and how many are already saved. WHAT'S FREE • One-click saving, restoring, search, and no limit on saved tabs. • File backup to latest.json and restoring from a backup file. • The last 10 automatic snapshots, the 30-day Trash, and the warning badge. • Importing tabs from OneTab exports and URL lists. TABHOLD PRO (ONE-TIME PURCHASE) Everything that keeps your tabs safe stays free. Pro is a one-time payment, not a subscription, and adds: • Dated backup files. Besides latest.json, one backup file per day in Downloads/TabHold, the last 30 kept. This needs file backup to be on. • 7 days of snapshots. Keep every snapshot from the past 7 days, up to 200, instead of the last 10. • Export. Export your saved tabs to CSV, Markdown or HTML. PRIVACY • No account and no sign-up. • Your saved tabs stay on this device: in TabHold's own storage, and in the backup file if you turn file backup on. TabHold has no server of its own, and the titles and URLs of your tabs are not sent anywhere. • To tell a fresh install from damaged data, TabHold keeps a small record in Chrome's sync storage, under a random install ID: the total number of saved groups plus Trash items, and when that number last changed. It contains no titles or URLs. • Pro only: when you activate a license key, and about once a day after that, TabHold sends the key to Polar (api.polar.sh), the payment service, to confirm it. Nothing about your tabs is included. PERMISSIONS • Tabs (Chrome shows this as "Read your browsing history"): to read the titles and URLs of the tabs you save, to take the automatic snapshots of your open windows (incognito windows are never included), and to reopen tabs when you restore. TabHold runs in incognito windows only if you allow it in Chrome's extension settings; if you allow it and click its button there, that window is saved like any other. • Tab groups: to save groups and recreate them with their titles, colors and collapsed state. • Storage and unlimited storage: storage keeps your settings, backup status, Pro license key and sync health record; unlimited storage lets your saved tabs, Trash and snapshots, which live in IndexedDB on this device, grow without the usual size cap. • Alarms: to run automatic snapshots, automatic file backups, the daily cleanup of the 30-day Trash and the daily Pro key check. • Downloads (optional): requested only when you turn on file backup. It lets TabHold write the backup file in your Downloads folder, find and clear its own entries in Chrome's download list, and, with Pro, remove dated backup files older than the last 30. Without it, everything else still works. COMPATIBILITY • Requires Chrome 120 or later. • Works with Chrome's built-in tab groups. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What happens if I uninstall and reinstall TabHold? If file backup was on, latest.json stays in Downloads/TabHold. After reinstalling, choose "Restore from a backup file" and pick it. Can I move my saved tabs to another computer? Yes. Copy latest.json to the other computer, install TabHold there, and restore from that file. How many tabs can I save? TabHold doesn't limit the number of saved tabs. It is tested with 20,000 saved tabs. Does Pro work offline? Yes. TabHold works without an internet connection. If the license server can't be reached, Pro stays on for up to 14 days after the last successful check and turns back on by itself once the key is confirmed again.
