A new tab opens next to the page you’re on — under it if tabs are on the side, or to the right if tabs are on top.

Next tab opens a new tab next to the page you’re on. If you use Chrome vertical tabs (tabs on the side), the new tab opens below the current tab. If tabs are on top, it opens to the right. Same place Chrome’s own “New tab below” / “New tab to the right” command uses — so related pages stay together instead of jumping to the end of the strip. That’s the whole point. Ctrl+T and the + button normally dump a blank tab at the far end. With a side strip, that new tab is nowhere near the article, ticket, or doc you were just looking at. Next tab keeps the new tab under (or beside) the one you’re on, so your place in the list doesn’t get lost. You can still give Ctrl+T to Next tab from chrome://extensions/shortcuts. The override is allowed; it just has to come from you. First launch walks you through it in three steps. Prefer to leave Ctrl+T alone? Turn that off in settings. The alternative shortcut still opens a tab below / next to the current one.
