# Captiv – Picture-in-Picture with Subtitles | PiP Captions for Any Video Watch videos in a floating Picture-in-Picture (PiP) window **without losing your subtitles**. Captiv is a Chrome extension that keeps subtitles and closed captions visible when you pop a video out of the page. It reads the active subtitle or caption track from the video player and shows it in the floating PiP window automatically. No subtitle files. No setup. No account. Just click the Captiv icon or press **Alt + P**. --- ## Why Captiv? Chrome's built-in Picture-in-Picture works great for keeping a video on screen, but there's one annoying problem: **subtitles often disappear when the video goes into PiP.** Captiv fixes that. The floating window includes: * Play / pause * 10-second rewind * 10-second forward * Video timeline and scrubbing ### 🌐 Works on any website with video Captiv isn't tied to a specific website or streaming service. It can work with video players across the web, including embedded video players, online courses, news websites, tutorials, and other sites that expose their subtitle tracks. ### 🖼️ Works with embedded players and iframes Videos are often loaded inside an iframe, sometimes from another domain. Captiv can detect supported videos inside these embedded players and bring their subtitles into PiP too. ### 🤖 Automatic subtitle detection Captiv uses the subtitle track you're already using. If the video is showing English subtitles, Captiv shows those subtitles in PiP. There's nothing to upload or configure. ### ⚡ One click or keyboard shortcut Click the Captiv icon in the Chrome toolbar, or press: **Alt + P** That's it. Click again to close PiP and return the video to the page. ### 🎨 Customize your subtitles You can change how your subtitles look: * Font size * Font family * Text color * Background color * Background opacity * Top or bottom position * Drop shadow * Outline * No edge style There's also a live preview so you can see how your settings look. --- ## Who is Captiv for? Captiv is useful if you regularly watch videos with subtitles and want to keep them visible while multitasking. **Language learners** — Keep subtitles visible while taking notes or reading in another tab. **Students** — Watch lectures and online courses while working on something else. **Developers** — Follow coding tutorials while keeping your editor or documentation open. **Caption users** — Keep closed captions visible in Picture-in-Picture. **Anyone who uses subtitles** — If you've ever clicked PiP and wondered where your captions went, Captiv is for you. --- ## How it works When you activate Captiv, it finds the video on the page and opens it in a Picture-in-Picture window. It then reads the active subtitle or caption track from the video player and displays the captions over the floating video. As the video plays, the subtitle text updates automatically. Everything happens locally in your browser. **No servers are involved.** --- ## Subtitle limitations Captiv can mirror subtitles when the video player exposes them as a readable text track. Some videos won't be able to show subtitles in PiP. For example: * Subtitles permanently baked into the video can't be read as a text track. * DRM-protected videos may prevent Captiv from compositing subtitles. * Some custom video players don't expose their subtitle tracks. In these cases, Captiv can still open the video in Picture-in-Picture, but the subtitle overlay may not be available. --- ## 🔒 Privacy Captiv collects **no data**. It doesn't track what you watch, where you browse, or what subtitles you use. Captiv needs access to websites because it is designed to work with videos across the web. This allows it to find videos, including videos inside embedded players and iframes, and read subtitle tracks when they're available. Without this permission, Captiv would have to maintain a fixed list of supported websites. The extension does not do anything until you activate it by clicking the Captiv button or pressing **Alt + P**. --- ## Open source Captiv is open source.
