Overview

Right-click to narrate selected text. Popup sets voice/rate/volume.

NarraTER is a very simple web narrator. reads aloud the text you select on any page. Use the popup to pick a voice and set speed (0.1–5×) and volume. The right-click menu provides Play/Pause, Restart, and Stop controls. Works in Chrome and Brave using built-in text-to-speech. Minimal permissions; no tracking. Works offline as well, if you have files you wish to read through your browser. To Get more voices (system-managed): Windows 10/11: Settings → Time & language → Speech → Manage voices → Add voices (add languages if needed in Language & region). Restart Brave/Chrome. macOS: System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → System Voice → Manage Voices… (download). Restart the browser. ChromeOS: Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-Speech → Voice → add/download voices. Linux: Install voice engines (e.g., espeak-ng, speech-dispatcher) via your distro, then restart the browser. Availability varies. After installing new voices, reopen NarraTER’s popup, pick the voice, and Save. If it doesn’t show, fully restart the browser.
