Nanotations - Annotate on any web page
Overview
Annotate web pages with drawings, arrows, and saved text highlights. Keep notes locally, use shortcuts, and export your ideas.
Draw on web pages and save the passages you want to keep. Nanotations combines a compact drawing toolbar with a local library for text highlights and notes. No account or subscription is required. DRAW AND ANNOTATE Use the pen, arrow, rectangle, ellipse, line, text, and freehand marker. Adjust colors, stroke width, opacity, and text size. Select an annotation to move it, drag its handles to adjust arrows and shapes, and undo or redo your changes. SAVE TEXT HIGHLIGHTS Choose the text-highlight tool and select a passage. Pick from six colors. Your selected text, page address, title, and notes stay in a library on your device. Search by passage, note, title, or website. Export highlights as plain text, or create and restore a JSON backup. RESTORE HIGHLIGHTS ON RETURN VISITS Saved text highlights reappear when you open Nanotations on the same page. You can also enable automatic restoration for individual sites. Chrome asks for access to the site you choose. Future visits restore saved highlights without opening the toolbar. If a passage changes and can no longer be matched, its saved text remains in your library. USE SHORTCUTS OR THE TOOLBAR The single-column toolbar is 32 pixels wide. Open it by clicking the extension icon, or activate a tool with a configurable shortcut and keep the toolbar hidden. Press Escape to browse again. Hold Space to temporarily interact with the page while drawing. EXPORT AN IMAGE Save the visible page and your annotations as a PNG. The toolbar and editing handles are hidden in the image. Choose where to save the file, then share it yourself. LOCAL AND FREE No sign-in, subscriptions, advertisements, analytics, or cloud uploads. No feature is behind a paywall. Saved highlights and notes use Chrome's local extension storage. Nanotations does not sell your data or send it to the developer. PRACTICAL LIMITS Text highlights and library notes persist locally. Freehand drawings, arrows, shapes, and page text boxes last for the current page session. Export an image before refreshing or leaving if you want to keep those marks. Saved text belongs to the exact page address, including its query and hash. Changes to the page may prevent a highlight from being restored. The saved passage remains in your library. Nanotations works on ordinary web pages. Chrome's internal pages, the Chrome Web Store, and the built-in PDF viewer are not supported. This release does not include PDF annotation, cross-device sync, or screenshot redaction. Local storage has a capacity limit. Back up important notes before removing the extension.
