Overview

Private on-device AI sidebar: chat with webpages, summarize and rewrite text, and automate browser tasks.

NanoChat is a private, on-device AI sidebar for Chrome. Open it beside the page you are reading to ask questions, summarize an article, explain a passage, rewrite selected text, or work from the page context without copying it into a separate chat. Built for focused reading, research, writing, and everyday browser productivity, NanoChat pairs webpage chat with a user-controlled AI browser agent. It runs through Chrome's built-in Prompt API and Gemini Nano—no API key, account, subscription, or external AI service is required. What you can do with NanoChat: - Chat with the current webpage or document in a dedicated AI side panel - Summarize articles, explain complex passages, translate selections, rewrite copy, and check spelling from the context menu - Attach images and screenshots for multimodal prompts on supported devices - Let the experimental browser agent propose and perform page actions such as clicking, typing, scrolling, and navigation - Keep a searchable local history of your conversations - Open the AI assistant quickly with a keyboard shortcut Privacy by design: - NanoChat does not send your prompts, page context, or conversations to an external AI service - Your chats are stored locally in the extension - Every browser-agent action remains visible and under your control Who it is for: - Students and researchers who want to understand and summarize web content faster - Writers and professionals who need an AI assistant alongside the page they are working on - Privacy-conscious users who want local AI instead of cloud-based chat tools - Developers exploring Chrome's built-in AI capabilities Requirements: - A desktop version of Google Chrome that supports the Prompt API and Gemini Nano - A device that meets Chrome's current on-device AI requirements; Chrome currently requires at least 22 GB of free space for the model and sufficient CPU or GPU resources - The built-in AI model must be available or downloaded in Chrome before use NanoChat is free and open source: https://github.com/cupcakedev/nanochat-extension
